Unfortunately, this torch is let down by poor materials. The actual brightness and beam is actually pretty good but it's let down by very cheap feeling materials and build quality. The plastic feels cheap and brittle and the wire going from head unit to the battery is thin and again, cheap feeling.
The torch head can be turned to adjust the beam pattern from wide to narrow and this is fine. The battery pack at the back of the headstrap has a dimmer and that also works quite well. The on/off button is at the front but as others have said, its quite small. The head of the unit can adjust down but using pre-set clicks and again, this mechanism feels cheap.
With better materials this would actually be a pretty good unit I think but alas I think that if it was dropped it would almost certainly fall to bits.
I got this for £2.74 in a sale and for that price it's ok, but right now its £19.99 and that's just crazy. You'd be far better off buying a CREE headtorch from elsewhere for £10 or so.
Unfortunately it comes in the ever annoying plastic vacuum packaging that takes a good pair of scissors and considerable time to get into. Once you're in, you find a small, lightweight light module along with AA batteries and battery unit (which sits at the side or back of the head) and strap to keep it in place.
The light itself is very bright and can be angled through a hinge although there are default angle positions which makes this slightly less useful than it first appears.
The strap is both easy to use and relatively comfortable, holding the light in place without too much pressure or grip. It should also be easy to clean, removing from the light unit if necessary. The main problem I had with the unit, however, was getting the strap the right size for my head, keeping the light in place but without too much pressure. It can be a bit annoying as the adjustment process isn't that easy, especially in the dark, so you would really need to have this pre-adjusted before using out of necessity.
The battery life is decent, although I've yet to experience the full 20 hours the manufacturer claims. I would've preferred a built-in rechargeable battery, but allowing replacements does at least enable the user to use their own rechargeable AA batteries, even if three are needed.
The brightness of the torch is controlled by a dial on the battery pack. The concentration of the beam by a dial on the light unit. It is undeniably very bright indeed on a full concentrated beam. When you widen the beam though the light appears more as a bright ring with a large dark spot in the middle rather than evenly dispersed. This makes it not good for reading or illuminating a wider area. This I feel is the most serious flaw with the product.
The headband is comfortable and easily adjustable. The front part is nicely curved with some foam padding and the back of the battery pack is rubberised so I expect it will sit pretty firmly on a night run. Being an AA branded product though I expect it is more effective for use fixing your car late at night rather than running around the woods.
There is a constant beam or a flashing beam setting. The flashing beam could be used in a hazard situation so a useful feature but most cheap torches do this.
You can tilt the torch beam at 3 further angles but it doesn't adjust in between these and feels quite flimsy. I think it would flop about a bit if you run around too much
I think it is a pretty good headtorch, ideally suited to jobs where you need a really focused and bright beam. For more general camping/reading/night running or walking though I don't think it suitable. I prefer my cheaper torches!
UPDATE: Wore this out night running last week and the tilt mechanism is useless if you are moving around. It does not lock in place and just flops around with the smallest movement. So it is no good at all for running.
The elasticated headband is adjustable, comfortable to wear and the controls at the back and the front are easy to use. The beam can be changed from wide angle to a spot, or you can have the light flashing (good if your car breaks down at night or if you cycle). You can also turn the beam down to dimmer mode. The torch gives a 50m-beam distance and the light is exceptionally bright and clear.
I would thoroughly recommend this head torch. I can't think of anything on it that could be improved and if - like I do - you live in an area prone to power cuts, it leaves you with both hands free to navigate in the blackout.
