Danny Gatton, what can I say? I'd been playing guitar (at least, I thought I'd been playing guitar) for some 28 years when a friend of mine, also a guitarist, put on Danny Gatton's "88 Elmira Street" in his truck while we were driving down Interstate 95 a few years ago. OK, so you're thinking, American honky music for a couple of rednecks out on a Saturday "nite".
How very wrong! Both I and my friend are from Ireland, he plays strictly Irish traditional and I'm into jazz for the most part. He said, as he pushed the CD into the player, "You HAVE to hear this; you will not believe this!". His words were true, and remain true to this day; I find it hard to believe that any one person could have all the musical gifts that Danny Gatton displays on this album. It doesn't matter what region of music you live in, some players like Miles, Duke, Jimi and Duane just seize your ears and have their way with them.
Thank you Danny. This album made a difference in my life.

If you have never heard of Danny Gatton, as the title suggests and you are into guitar music then this CD and several others will give your ears a real treat. I have been listening to guitar music for years and the range and quality of this mans playing are sometimes beyond belief, there is no wild pointless runs here, everything is controlled and the speed of playing can be astounding, after all this is the man who's concert auidiences always had well known guitarists in them to watch
a master at work.

Superlatives a-plenty for this CD and, indeed, for ANY Danny Gatton CD. Think of Lonnie Mack with more inventiveness plus influences of jazz, rockabilly, blues and just about any other style of guitar playing. An absolute MUST for anyone who enjoys electric guitar, and a DOUBLE MUST for any aspiring or experienced player. Look at other DG recordings as well - "Cruisin' Deuces" and "Relentless" are usually sensibly priced, but one or two others are ridiculously expensive.

I was expecting something more like the live shows on the Tube soundwise, but got something more polished but rather thinner in texture. I missed that roughness and the slap-back. Whilst this showcases the man's versatility and virtuosity, it wasn't what I bought into the DG franchise for, so 4 stars only for this one. Of course anyone who knows a banjo roll from a sausage roll will be wishing he'd stayed to knock out another dozen like it.

Some great playing, both from Danny Gatton himself and the other musicians. Recommended for anyone who likes guitar based rock and roll and more.
