"["85 Years of the Oscar"] represents a separate sort of pantheon, an almost literal hall of fame that requires readers to set up shop in a sturdy chair and make sure the teapot is full, because they won t be getting up again anytime soon." "The New York Times"
"But what ["85 Years of the Oscar"] truly is, in this age of websites and databases, is something gloriously old-fashioneda beautiful, hardcover, painstakingly researched reference source on the Academy Awards and the classic movies they have honored. It's a fourstar present for any cinephile." "The StarLedger"
"Essential for any cineaste completist's library." "The Philadelphia Inquirer"
"A must-read for movie buffs" "Booklist"
"For an Academy that prides itself on honoring outstanding achievements in the film industry, this book lives up to the same standard in publishing. With more than eight decades of history, the nonprofit organization certainly has a story to tell. And this one is worth reading. "Toledo Free Press"

A very informative book with lots of stunning pictures/photographs for the readers, but I was a bit disappointed that the book did not go into my details about the oscars race each year (ie surprise win/front runner) The book is also a bit too large to carry. But all in all, the book is one for oscars geek.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing and comprehensive 14 May 2014

This is the ultimate browsing book for the movie fan. Pop a bowl of popcorn, pour your favorite beverage, and sit down in your chair with this giant tome propped on a pillow (believe me, you'll need it to save your lap). You'll then regret you have to get up to refresh your beverage. Filled with hundreds of photos, endless skeins of trivia, and as many statistics and winner/loser lists as you could want, this book is a treasure.
The only caveat I would share is the print size. I bought this book for my wife for Christmas, and she loves it, but the very small print makes it difficult for her. So either get your eyes checked or maybe buy a magnifier. I wear bifocals and have no trouble, so it's not microscopic, but be forewarned.
Otherwise, the book is magnificent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST book anywhere about the Academy Awards 18 Nov. 2013

Yes, Osborne's book is expensive, but I buy it every five years when a new edition is published. And, the Amazon.com price is a REAL BARGAIN. No other book even comes remotely close to the authenticity of this exceptionally thorough volume. I have noticed that other books about the Academy Awards either contain outright false information or skip significant categories, nominees, and winners. Osborne includes every conceivable fact about the entire 85 years of the Oscars. The side bar commentaries from winners are fascinating and insightful. The vintage photographs and movie posters are likewise bonus features. This brand new edition is a treasure for people who love great films and are cinema history fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book 15 Feb. 2014

The official history of the Oscars is one of my favorite books. When I was a young teen, I would use very hot summer days or very cold winter afternoons to trudge to the library and settle in the reference section where I would read the weekly copies of Variety and, eventually...always...find the copy of 40 Years of Oscar. I would study it and study it. Later, those hot and cold days would result in me becoming the trivia expert at Oscar night parties! Robert Osborne's new book is a worthy successor to the previous volumes. I keep it at hand in my TV room. It's a BIG book, no doubt. If you are a fan of film and the Oscars it's a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classy book for the classic movie fan 16 April 2014
By baffle Raffle - Published on Amazon.com

85 years of Oscar is an opulent gift for the classic movie fan from classic movie fans’ number one fan Robert Osborn. This very large, very heavy book is a history of the Oscars from their start in 1929 until 2013. It’s the type of book you curl up with at the end of a long hard day and get caught up in the magic of the movies. Not a dry history book, but full of facts about the people and the times with lots of pictures. At no time does the information become dry and boring. This book takes the magic night that happens once a year and makes it last. I enjoy seeing classic Hollywood when I was young and even before I was born. The Oscars have again passed into history for another year but there is still time to enjoy this book and Amazon has the best price anywhere. One down side to the book is it is very large and heavy so make sure you have a good book prop to balance it on. I wish Robert would write a book on classic Hollywood, just facts and less pictures. This book is a must for the “classic Movie fan” as Robert would say. So curl up in your favorite reading spot, don’t forget the book prop, and enjoy this opulent gift of a book.
