Director François Ozon brings together many of France's most celebrated actresses for this country house murder musical set in the 1950s. When teenager Suzon (Virginie Ledoyen) returns to her family home for Christmas, she is greeted by her glamorous mother (Catherine Deneuve), her wheelchair-bound grandmother (Danielle Darrieux), her bookworm sister (Ludivine Sagnier), her spinster aunt (Isabelle Huppert) and the new family maid (Emmanuelle Béart). But the holiday is quickly thrown into confusion by the discovery that Suzon's father has been murdered in his room. One of the eight women gathered in the house must be the culprit, but which one?

Much attention seems to be paid to the art direction and the glamour of these women and when some break into song it gets a little ridiculous.
There are a few good set pieces, with Fanny Ardant (who doesn't appear until later in the film ) giving the best performance. The solution to the murder is a surprise, but I think that this amount of talent could have been used to better effect.
A man has been murdered in a country house cut off by a snowstorm. 8 women are suspects, they all have a motive and many secrets that have to be told before the end of the film....then....they burst into song :-)
What is unusual is the song does not replace narrative and this musical interlude is ignored, rather they acknowledge they have just burst into song, which is both odd and refreshing in equal measures.
Great actresses, amazing costumes and a plot that would baffle Agatha Christie :-)
Don't let me put you off, just be aware its not your usual film, it is however delightful to watch and has a lovely, if macabre twist at the end.
Enjoy and have fun!
The costumes the beauty and the pace are all fantastic.
The stand out performances are Deneuve, Ardant, and the sexy Beart!! Ledoyen and Sagnier bring youth and fun but the class of Deneuve dominates.
It's a good movie not a great one because the plot is a basic whodunit....
Do I recommend it ? Of course it's french camp and colourful and would be of good use for a french lesson or to just chill with your girlfriends. My husband nodded off shortly after it started ...it's a musical and it's very girly I just couldn't expect him to focus!! Lol. No seriously this movie has a TARGET audience ;)
Classic enclosed who dunnit a la Agatha Christie with a song from everybody. Stunning collection of French female stars with Deneuve and Huppert playing to type.
First 15 minutes - why am I watching this nonsence then you get drawn into the story and even some ham acting is overlooked.
Didn't guess the ending
