I use rechargeable batteries in my flashlight at work and I normally use the extremely high quality Ansmann 16+ charger. It's probably the best there is, however due to its size it's not that portable. I usually recharge my batteries when I am sleeping as the charger sits on my bedside table. The 7dayshop USB-powered charger looked interesting as it would let me charge AA and AAA batteries from a PC, which I have access to in work. I also wanted to try it with my solar powered charger that allows any USB items to plug into it. I have used 7dayshop batteries for years with no issues, so I assumed that the quality of their charger would be reasonable.
The 7dayshop USB-powered charger arrived quickly and appears to be made from the cheapest quality plastic available. It feels horrible and looks like a toy from Poundland. Surprisingly, it does work; I put in two batteries and the 7dayshop charger correctly registered that one battery was flat and the other was fully charged. However the build quality is so poor that I wouldn't leave it unattended.
On average, it takes about 5 hours to recharge 2x AA batteries from flat to full, based on a USB 2.0 port producing 0.54A.
Energiser used to make a USB-powered charger for AA and AAA batteries, but that charger seems to be no longer available. There is a similar product from Portapow, but I bought one and they don't work at all. Ansmann and Duracell still don't make USB-powered battery chargers.
I resolved my issue by purchasing the Ansmann 8+, a smaller version of the Ansmann 16+. These two chargers both have a dedicated "precharging" cycle for dead batteries and they can charge AAA, AA, C, D and 9-volt batteries. It's still pretty big, but I can keep it in my locker.
