The surface of the rumble roller contains specially designed bumps that are firm, but flexible, much like the thumbs of a massage therapist. As you roll over the top of the rumble roller, the bumps continuously knead the contours of your body, gently stretching soft tissue (muscle and fascia) in multiple directions. This action erodes trigger points, helps restore flexibility, and brings quick relief to common types of muscular pain. By design, the rumble roller's bumps are firmer than muscle tissue, but much softer than bone, so they deflect out of the way if they contact your spine or other bony protrusions. Through simple techniques, you can control the amount of pressure the bumps apply to your body. The bumps are closely spaced to one another (< 2 inch apart), so several of them simultaneously contact your body during most exercises. However, with a slight shift of your body, you can reduce your area of contact with the rumble roller, which increases pressure and provides deeper, more penetrating relief. The rumble roller's smooth, nonporous surface repels most dirt. It's also water-proof and latex free, and includes a molded-in antimicrobial additive that helps prevent the growth of bacteria and fungus. To clean your rumble roller, simply wipe it down as needed with soap and water or any common household cleaner.

If you've never tried foam rolling before, it does take some getting used to, but practise makes perfect, and there's a leaflet included, not to mention numerous guides on the internet.
If you've got knots, this will help to get them out, but it can be painful, and it's a matter of trying different ways of sitting and lying with different amounts of pressure of muscles on roller until you find what works for you. It can be painful, I admit, particularly on softer ares, but it is pretty effective and cheaper than paying for sports massages on a regular basis, and the pain can be lessened by the aforemention pressure variations. You need to find what works for YOU.
Apparently the black version is firmer, but believe me, if you're new to this, the blue is more than firm enough!
It's not pleasant - in fact it's quite painful where the nodules dig into the knots and muscle spasms - but it's brilliantly effective. Also great for loosening off tight calf muscles after walking a round. Stunningly good results!
I got it this morning, Ive had niggling back pain for months, within 5 mins of using the rumble roller my back pain was gone.
Dont get me wrong it hurts using it but the results are impressive
But after starting weight training & getting tight muscles i though there worth a look
Plus i hear trigger points if left can turn into scar tissue in the muscle.
Its hard to justify £42 on a piece of hard foam lol
But when you look at it that deep tissue massages can cost £35 for 25 mins
It dosnt seem such a bad investment considering you can use it whenever you like.
Its robust, it wont break under you
its firm but not over the top for a first foam roller imo having said that i dont think ill out grow it
I love the compact size its lightweight and easy to take anywere
Id highly recommend the rumble roller :)
Will save on regular massage visits; those who have them regularly wont need them so often. although its expensive, it will pay for itself very quickly.
