Switching out the hard drive is remarkably easy, and I think anyone with some patience and the ability to follow a simple step-by-step procedure can do the same. Just make sure you have all the right tools to hand to begin with, and don't rush it.
At the same time, I discovered and removed a huge amount of dust and fluff that had gathered inside, and this has probably lengthened the life of the machine considerably. So don't hesitate if you want to replace or upgrade your hard drive.
It works fine but is just slightly slower to react than the original drive, plus it has a habit of spinning and clicking every now and again, hence the dropped star, but functionally, it's really very reliable.
I chose this hard driver cause I have to install heavy applications on it (Matlab 2013a, Labview 2012, Solid Edge ST6, Visual studio 2010) as well as windows 7 64-bit, office 2010 + updates and ubuntu 14.04 LTS. In term of space and speed the HDD fit my requirements.
So far I don't have any issue with it, easy to install and I did not have to install any driver or configure the BIOS of my laptop to get it work.
So far my OS respond very well. Like the old one the HDD is very silent and it does not make any noise at all. transferring 30 GB of Data from My external HDD and my old HDD to that one went really well and fast less than 10 mins if I remember correctly.
Because I do a lot of engineering and play some emulators on it (NES, SNES, PS1 and NEO-GEO), I hope this HDD will last for a very long time. I will keep you up to date if it fail.
Delivery was very quick, and the packaging good being entirely secure without overwhelming the bin.
So to the drive itself: cloned without problems thanks to Acronis, having been fitted (eventually) into my desktop. Startup is noticeably faster, and it seems quieter too, though I don't remember if the Seagate started out really quiet too. It was certainly louder at the end, though not badly so. My liking of WD drives stems from good long-term results over a number of years, so I have high hopes for the life of this one.
The drive worked as expected, just ensure that your format it correctly when you plug it in for the first time.
A small issue is that there was only 698GB of available storage, 52GB less than advertised. It is normal for drives to have a little less storage than proposed, but 52GB is quite a bit less.
The packaging the drive came in was also quite bad. The box had got crushed slightly (by royal mail), and the thin plastic supports inside the box that held the drive in place were badly deformed. However, it didn't rattle at all and seems to work fine. Some bubble probably wouldn't go amiss for some extra protection against uncaring couriers.
Here is the drive bay adapter and SSD I used in conjunction with this hard drive for those interested:
Kingston SSD: Kingston SSDNow UV400 240 GB Solid State Drive 2.5 inch SATA 3 Stand-Alone Drive
3.5" to 2X 2.5" bay adapter with SATA power and data cables: Sabrent 3.5-Inch to x2 SSD / 2.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive Mounting Kit [SATA and Power Cables included] (BK-HDCC)
This setup is working fine after 1 month of use so far.
