WD was a brand recommended to me by the technician who services my computer equipment, so I felt confident in selecting the brand. After reading up on a number of alternatives I decided on 1TB unit by Western Digital. This was competitively priced and wasn't much more expensive than one with half the capacity, so it was a no brainer.
Once opened, simply plug in to your device using the USB lead provided and away you go. For example, if you have a word document open that you wish to save to the drive, simply press “save as”, locate the WD on your control panel, open the folder and click “save”.
I have to say that this is perfect for my requirements. The unit is very compact, has a large memory capacity and stores all of my personal and important documents off of my computer’s inbuilt storage. It has also increased the speed of my laptop by transferring these documents from my computer, which was an added bonus.
Best Uses : To free up space and back up your laptop’s (or other device’s) internal hard drive.
Pros : Excellent value, compact size, easy to set up, sleek, compatible with Windows 10.
Cons : None.
In summary : A very good, competitively priced portable hard drive. I hope you found my review helpful and would love for you to click “yes” if you did.
Eventually I decide to bite the bullet and format it, as all its content is still on my computer. Next Message:" Cannot Format this disk as it is read only".
There doesn't seem a lot more I can do except replace it. The Amazon replacement deadline has passed, - nice touch that,- so maybe I should try a different make, and a different supplier.
While I'm at it - a word or two of advice about external drives. As I have discovered to my cost, they can die suddenly and without any warning at all, leaving you up the proverbial without a paddle. Luckily, we still had copies of everything we had on the drive (we used the ext drive to backup our PC hard drive, cameras, phones, etc), but we lost all the historical backups. So my advice is twofold: 1) never put anything on the ext drive you haven't got other copies of (or that you don't mind losing), and 2) take periodic 'archive' backups of everything to DVDs.
most of our regular important stuff is backed up on dropbox but our photos and videos are too big so we use this for that purpose. the added advantage is that when we go away on holiday we can take away lots of films for the kids on it to watch in the car on their laptops.
it seems very quick to me. I have SSDs on many of our PCs and I don't think it's that fast but there are no noticeable lags at all even when watching a 1080p avi file over our home network with this attached to our home server.
I can' t think of too many negatives. maybe the windows-shares might be lost when unplugging and re-attaching? they were once but I may have plugged it back into a different USB port on the home server.
Western Digital are still the most reliable HDD manufacturer there is. At only £40 for such a small but high volume device I'm over the moon.
Picked up an extra one for connecting to my router for a wifi-capable home network storage device.
Can;t wait for the 2TB and 3TB models to come down in price. 3TB in something the size of a pack of cards would be mind blowing considering how over-the-moon I was to get a 3TB 3.5" drive a couple of years ago.
I see 3.5" external drives are not even being produced any more, so I can see a time where everyone's using something like this for storage/backup, especially with SSD drives becoming more commonplace inside laptops..
