Ribald comedy starring Steve Carell. Andy Stitzer (Carell) is a 40-year-old geek who works in an electronics store and seems content with his life and with his collection of comic books and action figures. But when his co-workers find out that Andy is still a virgin, they decide to set him up with a woman so he can finally have sex. After some horrendous dates, Andy meets single-mother Trish (Catherine Keener), a woman who genuinely seems to like him and who has just come out of a destructive relationship. But what Andy's friends don't know is that Trish isn't quite ready for a physical relationship with him yet, and that he's going to have to wait a bit longer before he can lose his virginity.
Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humour and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --Bret FetzerSee all Product Description

Originally rented this movie not expecting a lot. Boy was I wrong, we have since bought the DVD and usually watch bits of it about once a week.
The dialogue is an accurate interpretation of how adults interact with each other, constantly bickering more like children. The one upmanship of not admitting to what you are really thinking or feeling. The poor descriptions by characters about what life is about. The frustrations of embarrassing yourself in front of others.
It is hard to explain all the excellent bits without inclduing too many spoilers, however the actors involved obviously all get on with each other extremely well and this shines through. Although not all the actors involved in this film are well known they are superb at what they do.
Please see this film and do yourself a favour :)
Funny and sweet, 'The 40 Year Old Virgin' film starts from a high concept premise, but adds heart and soul, along with a bunch of laugh-out-loud moments.
The acting and writing, even in the small character roles, is excellent.
A side note; I saw this 132 min unrated version and loved it, but many film savvy friends who have seen both actually feel the original 117 minute
version actually flows better, and keeps a better pace.
From reading all the negative reviews of this film I have come to the conclusion that some people should not have the right to state their opinion when it is so clearly wrong. I can only imagine that these watched the film expecting it to be laugh-a-minute anchorman style gags, when it is clearly a very different style of movie. The humour is based around the characters and how they interact with eachother. It is not a slapstick, gag-based comedy as reading the title may suggest.
The humour is also very well layered. This is the first time in quite a while that I have watched a film so many times and noticed so many different things each time.
For those who haven't seen the film, don't expect it to be hilarious the first time you see it. But by the sixth or seventh viewing you will know what I am talking about. As the film is about two hours long (and well worth watching all of due to the genius end scene), to my knowledge that adds up to at least 14 hours of entertainment.
A must-have movie for any collection.
It rude, crude and generally very funny, buy it
