I am so pleased (and relieved) when I got these. I have found these little orange plugs do the job for me, much better than I could have hoped for. They come in individually packaged as sets of two. They are about 25 mm long and 13 mm across, are rounded at one end (see photo - pair on left hand side) and are made from a sort of "memory" foam, which adapts to the contours of your ear canal when inserted.
You need to make sure they are properly fitted (you don't just stuff them in, as I did the first time I used them without looking at the box!). You roll them up between your thumb and fingers until they are thin and then gently insert into your open open ear. They then expand in you ear cavity to block out sound). There are even videos on YouTube showing you how to do it. I found it took a bit of trial and error to fit them perfectly (A slight roll between the fingers as I gently inserted them tended to do the trick for me).
They didn't block out sound completely, but definitely reduced it significantly and also "dulled" the higher pitched noises too. I found it much easier to get to sleep and stay asleep, once there.
I also found an unexpected advantage of using these was, because I knew they worked, I was less anxious about getting to sleep (I wasn't lying there just waiting for the next loud noise to disturb me) so I found I was much more relaxed to begin with when going to bed and so got to sleep even easier!
A couple of points. Even though they are very comfortable, even when lying on them, I found it took about a week to get completely used to wearing the something in my ear (and particularly the sound of my own breathing). If you have the same problem, I'd recommend sticking with them, you will quickly get used to them and the reward of a good night's sleep is definitely worth the effort.
Wished I tried these things years ago.
I have also tried two other kinds of foam ear plugs;
Firstly; 3M E-A-R Classic Earplugs (B0079G4ZH2) (the middle pair in the picture). These are made from a slightly more "foamy" material than the "1100" type. The have the same diameter as the 1100s, but are slightly shorter (19mm) and have no tapered end. I found these just about as effective as keeping the noise out. (5 stars)
Secondly; Laser Lite Ear Plugs by Honeywell SNR 35dB Earplugs (B018RIA3L2) (the right hand pair in the picture). They have a rounded end and are about 30mm total length, although the cylinder shape is only about 20 mm long. I found these okay. While being made of by far the softest foal material, I found them the least comfortable to wear, for some reason and I didn't think they kept the sound out quite as well for me as the other two types, so 3 stars.
One final point. Because everyone is different, one of these styles of plug may not work for you, however, I would recommend trying out others until you find the right one for you. I know what it's like to be kept awake. It wears you down. Please keep looking. Don't give up. There are so many different types on the market and the right for you will be out there.
I've tried then all, funny colored ones, cheap ones, expensive ones, if there's is something out there that can shoved into my ears to kill noise, i've tried it...
This is it, this is the real, this is the best, i like to play a game where i sit on my bed, staring at my dehumidifier, put those plugs on, and slowly but surely the dehumidifier disappears (at least the noise of it) it's heaven....
There are 3 minor downsides:
1 - the pressure that it creates once it expands is slightly higher than others, but you soon get used to it, in fact it's quite comforting... weird...
2 - this plug is actually so good that i've used my lighter on my fire alarm, and i could barely hear the siren going, so i guess if i actually get a fire during my deep sleep i probably won't wake up on time to get out of the fumes
3- on my first night using it, i went to bed at 9:30am as usual to wake up at 17:30, i ended up waking up at 23:30 because i couldn't hear my alarm clock, i had to buy a louder alarm clock to compensate the goodness of these plugs, my boss wasn't impressed...
these are for me due to the missus snoring as I had run out of the last lot I had I decided to get a larger quantity lol.
I struggle to get a good nights sleep without these and have found these do as well as my last lot, in that they dull the noise sufficiently to a background noise level which is good enough for me to get to sleep.
Roll them in to a pencil shape put them in your ear and they expand in seconds to your ear contour.
would recommend this to any poor suffering husband who has a snorer next to them of a night.
Individually wrapped, in a bulk box. If you need earplugs to sleep, these are top notch. No, they aren't moulded into a curvy shape, or made into swirly colours, but these are the real deal. I use them for riding Motorbikes, and the wife uses them to block out the motorbike sound noise I make when snoring!
At less than 9p a pair, this is probably the best deal of the year for me so far.
Shipping was incredibly quick too - a great deal all round.
Just mould the foam in your fingertips for a few seconds until shaped to a point, then insert in the ear, hold in place for 10 seconds, then voila, the ear plug sits in your ear. I have also found these to be durable and have had good use out of them for at least four times. Good practice is to replace and use fresh ones every time, but I don't carry a pocket full of ear plugs, so this is also good.
The price and box quantity here is excellent and worth the money. Highly recommended.
