Top customer reviews
The Mini 311 is great - just the right size to have a decent screen and keyboard, but still compact and light. The graphics seem very bright, clear and sharp. The battery seems to last well - indeed over the claimed 6 hours yesterday, and it runs cool, especially on battery. It has 3 USB ports, and a memory card reader, and an HDMI output (which I can't try since I don't have a TV).
I also upgraded the memory to 2 GB (from Crucial), to give the software a bit more space, and a slimline USB DVD. The upgrade to Windows 7 was reasonable - Microsoft have done a good job. Even though it is a reinstall, they do provide easy tools for keeping the data from XP. Once upgraded, I went to the HP support site and updated all the relevant drivers. I also installed Office 2003 - it works just fine. The HP Quicksync (syncables) software is very handy for keeping the netbook in line with my desktop documents etc...
Overall, I love it!
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Upgrade Edition for XP or Vista users (PC DVD)
Slimline USB External CD RW DVD ROM Drive for Laptops, Desktop and Netbooks
also: nvidia is leaving the chipset business so this model is unlikely to be replaced/upgraded, intel will have to step up to the low-power high-def bar.... (acer 532g with the ion2 chipset has been shelved, the only other ion2 option is the 10" asus 1015pn)
looks nice and well built. screen/graphics are good for netbook and makes a differance even just web browsing.
battery life is good as predicted.
I have upgraded the operating system to Windows 7 professional and it runs very well and I think quicker than the supplied OS Windows XP Home.
I've dual booted it with Linux Mint and all the hardware is supported and it runs even faster using Linux.
The laptop is powerful for most tasks. You need to take into consideration that its running a 1.6ghz atom processor so don't expect to do video editing with this computer.
I've upgraded the ram to 3gb. I am not aware of many netbooks in this class that can be upgraded to 3gb.
The graphic chip is an Nvidia ION le. Very powerful for a laptop of this size and the laptop has a HDMI output.
You can access the hard drive easiy and Ive also removed the hard drive that came with it and replaced it with a 64gb solid state drive.
(Even without the ssd the laptop was spirghtly to use but with the ssd installed its very fast.)
After several weeks of use I have found it a pleasure to work with. The screen is very clear and of good quality. The keyboard has an excellent feel and is very responsive. The track pad is good if not the best I have used.
The laptop is quiet in use. By default the coolling fan is set in teh BIOS to be always on but to be honest it very quiet and does not effect hearing anything on the laptop etc.
Battery Life is good and I can get about 6 hrs through normal use .eg web surfing, word processing etc
Xp ran very quick on this system with fitted kit, however l have added and changed a few bits.
System now runs Windows 7 home premium without a hitch and also dual booting with Ubuntu 10.10 which also runs without a problem.
Have added 2GB of DDR3 and upgraded to a 500GB HDD as l will be using it while l travel for games and HD video.
All in all a fantastic bit of kit, there is nothing out there that can do the same job at this price, leaves my old Samsung NC10 standing in dust.
Well worth the money in every respect.
