Excellent book and a must for all serious graphic designers - what are particularly useful are the contextual illustrations showing the best uses of the various bedrock fonts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Its all about personal opinion 10 Nov. 2006
By MMB - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
When it comes to type faces, sometimes its all about personal opinions and taste. But this book covers the basics and talks about many of the type faces that i use often. It covers some typography history and explains why the typeface was origanlly created, and what the typeface is typically used for. Deffinately an interesting read if you're into typography, but if you're not and just want a type specimen book, then this book isnt for you. I'd have to say the essay "a day w/ out helvetica" was the best part of the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Distillation 9 Jan. 2012
By Stango Tigerfists - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The number of typefaces a designer has to choose from can be overwhelming, especially when so many of them are just derivatives of older, more foundational styles. While any book of this kind boils down to opinion, I found that it helped give me traction in selecting a set of basics that I can use as a starting point. There's also enough background information and history given that you can understand the rationale behind each typeface. Just a solid, concise reference that I'm glad I picked up.

I gave the book four stars instead of five due to a few obvious typos I encountered, which is always disappointing in a book about typography.

4.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RESOURCE 4 Jan. 2007
By Melba Gounas - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
a excellent resourse book thats easy to follow and point you in the right directions regarding type. it also has a unique way of pointing where the typeface is best used for. eg helvetica is good to use for display boards becaus of its x-height.etc.
5.0 out of 5 stars In one book an education that will last a lifetime 13 Feb. 2013

I bought this handsome, slim volume because I saw a DVD entitled "Helvetica," which is Swedish for Sweden. Helvetica is also the name of the most widely used font and appears everywhere, if you are observant. The volume details and beautifully illustrates thirty of the most important fonts used in advertising, business, the newspaper and magazine trades, and in every other activity requiring letters. One does not easily put the book down before finishing.
If you have a need for an understanding of fonts, from choosing a style for your e-mails or letter writing to using them in your business, purchase this book with great anticipation that it will be a wonderful read..

4.0 out of 5 stars 30 Essential Typefaces for a Lifetime-Review 17 Aug. 2009

This was a handy recommendation from the Typography class I had to take. This book has been used over and over again for other classes and it can be quite quotable by the introductory pages that lead from typeface to typeface. I'm currently working on a newsletter for Layout, "Big Deal?" right?. The teacher is a really experienced Designer who still works in the field as a side job, and to "wow" her takes a lot or just a little when it comes to directly quoting from this text. It clearly states when certain texts should be used, the individual it originated from, and a brief history about them and examples of what the text looks like. Overall, it's very handy and affordable for the price and if I would have bought this one from school (though it wasn't required to have) it would have been a little on the pricey side.
