I already have this brilliant little puzzler on my PC, and seeing it is free today is an excellent late Christmas present. A fresh take on construction/physics based games, it is both fun and thought provoking. If you don't already own this fantastic app, then get it whilst it is free app of the day.

This is an amusing game where you "rescue" little suicidal goo-balls by building frameworks held up by ballooons. It becomes quite challenging and it's very frustrating when you run out of goo-balls just as your framework reaches the target. Nevertheless it's a good one for whiling away a few idle moments.

I have never played anything quite like this before! You need to build networks of goo to reach a pipe that will suck up the goo balls you have left over. Levels are completed by rescuing the required number of goo balls. The difficulty level is very well done at the beginning: not too hard, not too easy. You need to build vertically mostly, although some levels require horizontal structures, and others are set in a landscape that is rotating. Sometimes some of the goo can be used like balloons to lift obstacles out of the way. So far, so inventive!

I was initially frustrated by the lack of instructions, but I sought help from a nearby nine year old boy and all became clear. There is some sort of back story about the Goo Corporation, but who or what this is remains to be seen. This is a quality app, with great graphics, great gameplay, music that you can actually bear to keep turned on, and a unique aesthetic. It will probably not appeal to everyone, but give it a go while it is free. The best recommendation I can give is that it would actually be worth paying for.

a simple concept that proves challenging. it can take you a while on some screens just to work out what you need to do.
The difficulty ramps up as you proceed and keeps things interesting. Plays well on a tablet, a bit more explanatory text at the start might have been helpful but you soon figure it out.

A spongey bridge builder I suppose I'd describe it as? Spongey as in the goo you build with is not solid, so there's lots of give/wobble that you either have to allow for, or support frequently.

The goal of the game is to get your little goo balls into the pipe that is situated somewhere in the level. You do this by using the goo balls to build a structure to get there, while leaving enough goo balls to be sucked up by the pipe (there is a minimum amount needed to pass a level). Some goo balls solidify once used so can't count towards your score, others can be removed & reused and you can then begin a game of jenga once you've reached the pipe, trying to remove goo balls without completely compromising your structure (in order to maximise your score). As you progress different types of goo balls are introduced.

Some of the levels so far I've found a bit cheesy, in that you can build essentially the same structure twice, but build it a little quicker once it starts wobbling/listing and you'll reach your goal before your goo tower collapses. Since the structure stabilizes once you reach the pipe (due to the suction) this can be the difference between failing and getting a high score.

I don't like how once you reach the pipe, you can seperate the part that's reached the pipe from the rest of your structure, and just carry the goo balls over one by one (seems to be a high score tactic).

I think I'm on the 3rd chapter. The story is too out there and strange for my liking from what I've seen so far, so for me that element is lacking.

Update: Completed it. Enjoyed the puzzle elements more as it went along so I've increased the rating by 1 star. It did change up the style of puzzle at around chapter 4 which added some more variety. The story did improve a little too.

I've played World of Goo on the PC and thought it was great. I could't believe it when I came across this on "Free App of the Day". I got it straight away. Its way more fun on the tablet as well. It gets really difficult though, so it's more for teens/adults rather than children. I would definitely recommend!
