This album was originally issued in 1980 when the Country Gentlemen were celebrating their 25 years in the business. Thus the 25 years of the title should not be read as a total career overview. The tracks with the exception of two later Sugar Hill recordings come from their years recording for the Rebel label. The majority of the tracks thus have the classic line up of Charlie Waller, John Duffey, Eddie Adcock and Tom Gray. Whilst the Country Gentlemen changed personnel over the years, this line up is the one most people remember, and certainly I think it is one of the best they had.
The Country Gentlemen brought much to Bluegrass, expanded the repertoire, and encouraged many young people to take up instruments and perform. It is not for hits that people will buy for music. It is to renew aquaintance with music from the 1960s and 1970s, sometimes purchased on vinyl, now discarded and lost, or heard played live at festivals. The Country Gentlemen were always superb live, Charlie Waller made a great leader, and, like Lester Flatt, could hold a crowd in the palm of his hand.
All of the tracks selected here have merit, there are no duds. What is so interesting is the source of the songs. Matterhorn which leads off the album was one of their favourites, and this was written by Mel Tillis, Girl From The North Country is a Bob Dylan number, Letter To Tom was written by John Duffey and The Fields Have Turned Brown by Carter Stanley. From such a diverse pool of writers come songs that have been given superb performances by the Country Gentlemen that people have almost forgotten the original source. Remarkable that in style and arrangement they can bring in music to their repertoire, and add something to it. I have chosen four to make the example, but you can perm any number on this album.

As a recent convert to Bluegrass I found this album both enlightening and entertaining. If you like banjo picking and great fiddle music, then this is a cd for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars 25 Years--Great CD 25 July 2013

I could not decide which CD to buy. Each of the 5 CDs had at least one song that I wanted. Not one of the CDs had all of my favorite songs. I ended up buying all 5 CDs. This CD had the song "500 Miles". I am glad I bought all 5 CDs. Each different CD is loaded with great songs (most I never heard before). I recommend this CD, as well as the other four.

As a listener of country music, especially Bluegrass, this group cannot be beat. I love their voice blending and everything they record. Members have changed over the years, but their success remains.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Introduction to an Amazing Band 4 Jun. 2007
By Steve Vrana - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I first purchased this collection on vinyl shortly after its original release in 1982 after seeing the Country Gentlemen play live at a festival. Over the course of twenty-six songs, the listener is provided with a concise history of this seminal band. However, while the title 25 YEARS implies a complete history, be aware that what you are really getting is a collection of songs recorded for Rebel Records from the mid-sixties through 1980 (although two tracks--"Come & Sit by the River" and "The Likes of You"--are provided by their then current label Sugar Hill.) Because the Country Gentlemen recorded for a variety of labels during their first twenty-five years (Starday, Vanguard, Folkways among them), this collection is not as thorough as it could be.

Despite those limitations, there is some excellent material here, especially the period from 1959 through 1969 when the classic lineup included Charlie Waller on guitar and vocals (the founder and lone constant throughout the entire band's history), John Duffey on mandolin and vocals, Eddie Adcock on banjo, and either Tom Gray or Ed Ferris on bass. Fully half of the tracks (1-12 and 20) feature this configuration of the band. [Note: Duffey and Gray would later team up again in The Seldom Scene in the early seventies.]

For the most part, the Country Gentlemen kept things fairly traditional. Even when they covered more contemporary material (Dylan's "Girl from the North Country," Gordon Lightfoot's "Redwood Hill," Graham Nash's "Teach Your Children"), it really wasn't much of a stretch to treat these songs as bluegrass numbers. It is worth noting, however, that the two Sugar Hill numbers have the Country Gentlemen updating their sound by adding a drummer.

My only complaint is that the Doyle Lawson years (1971 through 1979) are represented by a mere four songs. [That's Lawson singing lead on "Dixieland for Me."] That quibble aside, this is a fine collection and an enjoyable introduction to this amazing band. [Running Time - 72:16] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
