I found a slightly worn copy of this excellent volume in a bookshop some years ago and it immediately brought back memories of those SF paperbacks I purchased as a young man.
I was always taught at school that one should never judge a book by its cover and that the book would invariably be better than the film, simply because we could rely on the wonders of our own imagination to give 'life' to a story.
Chris Foss singlehandedly turned these arguments around: for his imagination, the excellence of his art and the technical wizadry that was somehow captured - as if one were looking through a window - gave life and a fascination to the words contained within. I purchased many books simply because one of his pictures was on the cover, and I always thought that only Azimov could do him justice; though even the seminal original Foundation trilogy was outpaced by the artwork as the three books were placed side by side and a masterpiece came into view. Though the newer `Hardware' book about Chris Foss is better on every level. This slightly lesser volume is still an excellent record not only of Foss's work but some of those wonderful paperbacks that seem much more bland these days.
Although no longer in print, if you can get a copy of this most awesome and iconic of books you will NOT be disappointed. Chris Foss is the God of Science Fiction art. I bought mine when it first came out! Yes, there are other greats like Chris Moore, Peter Elson, Jim Burns and more......but Chris Foss should be recognised as the one that really started it all..........
