Without exception, the only topic of the reviews of this edition of the Michelin Red Guide thus far consists of the criticism of its being in French. The Guide has not been published in English for a few years. I think that the last English edition was in 2008 (which I still have) or 2009 (which I have given away). I contacted Michelin about the availability of an English edition in 2009 or 2010 and was told that there was no intention to publish an English edition in the foreseeable future. I do not therefore really think that it is fair to criticise the Guide on this basis, though I agree that it perhaps should be made clear on the Amazon site for the unaware. Anyone purchasing these 'Red Guides' should be aware that they are published in the native language of the country being reviewed. In some cases, this is self-evident. Hence the German guide is entitled 'Deutschland'. Herein perhaps lies the kernel of the problem - France is France both in English and in French.

I have always found the Guide reasonably reliable. The descriptions of hotels and restaurant are short and not discursive, and are understandable to one who took French 'O level' (in which I achieved the lowest grade of pass!) in 1963. If there are words that I cannot understand, I use what is known as a French-English dictionary. In any case, I always have had the impression that the descriptions of hotels and restaurants are written by the proprietors and then submitted for approval and editing. On another aspect, the maps of the French towns are excellent (the best that I have encountered with the braodest coverage of individual towns) and of great use to those who do not believe that satellite navigation systems are a worthwhile investment. The Guide is far more digestible (no pun intended) than on-line sites such as 'Tripadvisor' and I will continue to use it.

Although the descriptions are in French it is still a worthwhile volume to have if you are touring France or just visiting one of the large cities. Huge number of town plans. I have found the reviews of Hotels and restaurants to be good and accurate.

This is a classic guidebook that has been written in French for many years. I find it quite incredible that potential visitors to France might think reading a few words of French somewhat strange ! It is not suprising that French waiters can be rude if faced with such attitudes.

The front cover is written in English, as is the "How to use the guide" section, unfortunately that is where it ends, and if like me a very distant memory of GCSE French is all you have, this guide will be useless! Why not have English descriptions for the restaurant and hotel information? I have sent mine back and will look for a more appropriate source of information.
