Format: Paperback
The author, Derek Tait, has certainly done his homework. As I read through this it confirmed that there was a ventriloquist, Peter Brough with Archie Andrews on the radio. Jimmy Clitheroe was another radio treat. The 1950's are portrayed with uncanny accuracy and research by the author. His description of the average 50's household and life is spot on. With the absence of modern conveniences such as cars, telephones and local stores, the emphasis is rightly put on the mother's shoulders. My Dad worked in a butcher's shop following de-mob. He was fortunate to find employment yet alone survive the war having been shot down in a Lancaster. Many thousands were less fortunate. Rationing was still present and money short. All aspects of the era are covered with the schooling, wireless, television becoming a wonder, whilst healthy outdoor pursuits dominated, no doubt banned by today's Health and Safety brigade.

My daughters are of an age where they have heard it all before, but now my tales have foundation. This is more than nostalgia and should not limit it's audience. It is an astute depiction of a piece of history for the hundreds of thousands who grew up through this post-war period. I have nothing but fond memories, apart from medicated Izal, but have not suffered. This book certainly fills in many gaps, including a chronological history of events. My family have enjoyed it and the writer deserves a wide readership.

Good little book. Helps with dementia as it means that people can show what they did and try to jog their memory.

I think this book would appeal to the males of that era rather than females, rather disappointing.
