It takes time to get used to the multiple styles he uses to bring the period and the people to life, but once you do, once you take time to read a little more slowly, you feel his rhythm and your mind reacts to it in the way your body reacts to music. You're swept along.
I cannot recommend this trilogy highly enough. Together I think they are the great American novel, part dream, part nightmare, all so vital and compelling. These books enriched my life and I'm pretty sure they've changed it for the better. I hope they do the same for you too.
He's a one-man band in this reading, making this dense and complex novel highly understandable in audio format. His pacing is fine; he reads quickly enough to not sound stilted, but slowly enough that it's easy to follow the story.

Just heard a reference last night to Dos Passos in a film about writers.
