In 1919 two thousand soldiers, ordered to embark for France, mutinied, formed a 'Soldiers Union' and went on strike. The boats sailed empty.

In 1919 the London metropolitan police went on strike, with flying pickets hundreds-strong going from police station to station forcing others to join them.

In 1919 a hundred thousand workers in Glasgow struck in support of their demand for a 40-hour working week; mass pickets marched from factory to factory bringing them out.

In 1919 sailors on board the patrol vessel HMS Kilbride, demanding better pay, refused to go to sea, hauled down the naval ensign, and hoisted the Red Flag.

In 1919, said the man who was to become Home Office director of intelligence, 'I do not think at any time in history since the Bristol riots we have been so near revolution.'

In 1919 prime minister Lloyd George told the trade union leaders: '... in our opinion we are at your mercy.

This book draws on Cabinet records, many of them published here for the first time, to tell of the year Britain stood on the brink.

Interesting history lesson

I think this is worth a read as an introduction to UK working-class history in 1919. The author makes some political points in relation to the history discussed - doesn't go into any depth with the political points, but it's only a small book. I found it interesting anyway & would recommend to anyone unfamiliar with the period.

This is a short guide to the years after WW1, when strikes and high inflation hit Britain (and many other European countries).
Although there were many examples of industrial action, the political parties of the time did not plan revolution in Britain.
Chanie Rosenberg used contemporary records to describe the events of 1919.

Chanie Rosenberg writes an excellent presentation of a period of British history which has been much ignored.

During the First World War, French troops mutinied and Russian troops supported the bolshevik revolution which put an end to the war and published the secret treaties. But we have been left with the impression of a British population united behind the Empire's leaders and ready for any sacrifice since the motherland demanded it.

In reality, once the war was over, underlying discontent exploded into mass strikes and mutinies, and Rosenberg feels that Britain has never been closer to revolution than that year. Essential reading.
