The author does reasonable characterization and good action sequences although again the tendency to pile coincidence upon coincidence gave a very "Hollywood" feel to it - I lost count of how often chance intruded (at the last minute, of course) to stop "our hero" from reaching the oil-drilling platform in order to frustrate the "bad guy's" plan only for good luck to drop into his lap and set him back on course but it really did get to the laughable stage.
If the ridiculousness of the plot was overcome (partly by cutting out all the familial coincidences) this could make an excellent action/thriller movie but as the novel it is, I would strongly recommend leaving it "15,000 feet below"
The complex and 3-dimensional nature of the characters really drew me into the narrative and I refused to put it down, desperate to discover if they were successful in their quest. The vividly portrayed barren setting of the Arctic Circle perfectly complements the tone of the novel, serving to build the feeling of suspense and urgency.
All in all, this is a top class debut novel from this author; I will keep a close lookout for him in the future.
The writing flowed well and I had no trouble finishing and in fact read the last half in one sitting.
If I had one gripe it would be that Roy, to my mind anyway, occasionally said or did things I thought out of character, a minor quibble admittedly
I loved the dramatisation and the pacing of the plot.
Good luck with the next one if you read this, I'll keep an eye out.
Yes, at times, the story seemed implausible. The characters would get to the right place in the nick of time, they would meet up with who they needed to at the right time, etch. But as long as you just went along with this, then the story just flowed along quite rapidly.
I did find this a nice easy read and, at times, un-put-downable.
You really get to know these characters and I found myself desperately rooting for the two protagonists in their quest to avert the cataclysm. The emotional and action-packed ending left me stunned and actually brought a tear to my eye.
