From the Inside Flap

A guide to creating results through focus, commitment, and accountability

The 12 Week Year is a process forged in the field of sports, used by world–class athletes and transformed for business and everyday life by Brian P. Moran and Michael Lennington.

This is not a book of theory. The 12 Week Year has been vetted by thousands of clients and hundreds of companies, and is backed by years of real life experience. In this groundbreaking book, the authors unlock the simple secret to help you accomplish more.

What differentiates truly great performers and organizations from mediocre ones is an ability to effectively execute on what they know. There is a gap for most of us between what we know we should do, and what we are actually willing to do. This knowing–doing gap is what keeps most people and most companies from accomplishing what they are capable of.

The 12 Week Year incorporates the proven disciplines and principles of effective execution into the context of 12–week execution cycles. In the book, you′ll discover how to develop clarity and focus on what matters most and a healthy sense of urgency to get it done. You′ll learn how to:

  • Take back control of your day
  • Increase your income
  • Balance the priorities in your life
  • Lower your stress
  • Accomplish your goals in record time

The 12 Week Year is a how–to book for both individuals and organizations that would like to accomplish more in the next 12 weeks than others will in the next 12 months. Join the thousands who are already experiencing the benefits of the 12 Week Year. Get this book and turn the idea of a year on its head, and speed your journey to success. Leverage the power of The 12 Week Year to drive improved results in any area of your life.

From the Back Cover

Praise for The 12 Week Year

"This book takes all the core business principles I believe are so valuable discipline, consistency, focus, intensity, ownership, accountability, and planning and puts them together in a straightforward system that actually works. What more can you ask for?"
MATTHEW E. WINTER, President, Allstate Auto, Home and Agencies

"The 12 Week Year is a book you can open to any chapter and find valuable insights and practical actions you can put into practice today. Read it; study it; apply it!"
TOM IZZO, Head Coach, Michigan State University men′s basketball team

"Brian Moran and Michael Lennington have persuaded me that focusing on shorter time periods four ′year ends′ instead of one brings clarity and urgency to individuals and teams. I′ve already drawn up my own 12–week plan. Exciting!"
SUSAN SCOTT, author of Fierce Conversations and Fierce Leadership

"If you are an executive or entrepreneur and you are serious about creating a high–performance culture that executes well, then read this book and have your team read it too."
JOHN VACCARO, Senior Vice President, MassMutual Financial Group

"The 12 Week Year is a powerful system for achieving extraordinary results both professionally and personally. It′s a simple yet proven approach to creating breakthrough results. If you′re committed to making lasting changes, this is a must–read!"
TOM BURNS, Chief Distribution Officer, Allianz

It's not WHAT you know, it's not even WHO you know, It's what you IMPLEMENT that counts.

It is quite common for people to work at hard year end because of deadline. Often year end sales are higher. Having a goal and immediate deadline get people focussed and working harder. So, why save the effort for only once every year and not few times every year? Rather than having 12-month goals, aim for 12-week goals let people pursue them with same kind of concentrated effort for year end goals.

Key Insights

- We don’t have a knowledge problem, we have an execution problem
- Results are not the attainment of greatness, but simply confirmation of it
- People earning $ 1,000,000 per year aren’t working 10 times harder than people earning $100,000
- Humans are like icebergs – we only reveal a small portion of our emotions
- Dramatic difference between “fallure” and “failure”

Some useful quotes from the book

“Execution is the single greatest market differentiator.”

“The secret to living your life to its potential is to value the important stuff above your own comfort.”

“The fall of dropping water wears away the stone.”

“The fall of dropping water wears away the stone.” – Lucretious

“The greatest predictor of your future are your daily actions.”

“A good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow.” – George Patton

“Everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face.” – Mike Tyson

“The speed of the leader is the speed of the team.” – Lee Iacocca

If you don't know where you are going, you will end up somewhere else. - Yogi Bera

In God we trust, everyone else must bring data.

Strive for excellence, not perfection. Achieving 85% of activities is often good enough.

It is what you do daily shapes your future.

Outstanding book. Very succinctly written with no fluff or filler. Just gets straight to the point. Anyone looking at this book is probably looking for ways to avoid procrastination, getting stuck in a rut and failing to follow through and achieve what they think they might be capable of. To those people I would say, GET THIS BOOK IMMEDIATELY and read it today. This is one of those books with the potential to be life changing. Yes it really is that good. Thanks.

I'm going to do something I don't think I've ever done before. I am going to write a review before I've even finished the book.

I purchased 12 Week Year via Kindle for over £10.
My usual purchases are 1/4 to 1/2 that price and I was genuinely concerned about whether the book would be worth it.
(I read, on average 5-6 books a week, so costs soon mount up!)

However I am delighted and have already - at apparently 35% of the way through the book - received more than £10 worth of value. Way more value, to be honest.

I've still not got to the bottom of how the whole 12 Week Year is implemented but regardless, the insights, the different way of addressing our goals, our commitments and - most importantly - attaining them has really hit home, in a most applicable manner. I'm seeing paths I can apply and walk to both professional and personal elements of my life.

When reading I tend to
- highlight sections,
- make notes on Kindle (for end of month review / revisit)
- occasionally take written notes to further cement ideas.
With 12 Week Year, I've already made endless **written** notes on elements that are so valuable I really don't want them to slip my mind.

For some perspective, I've probably read 100+ Productivity / Creativity orientated books across the last decade, effortlessly, but right now, 12 Week Year is up there with the best of them.

If the book ended now, with nothing further gained, I'd be pleased with my purchase.

The book is well written and is easy to follow and full of Eureka moments. Finished the book on a Sunday and got down to implementing the approach. A couple of weeks in and I can already see that this is going to have a huge impact on my performance (I'm in sales). But, it's not easy. I am constantly having to battle the old me who wants to return to previous bad habits. I was a bit annoyed to find that the 'achieve' online system referred to in the book was no longer available. The book refers to this as the place to get templates, training videos and to use the online system. The achieve system is now being sold for $2000 and there are no free templates or videos referred to in the book - hence 4 stars.

OH I love this book. If you are a 'leave it to the last minute' person, this book will helps you speed things up and feel motivated to work. Brilliant concept and so simple. A bit repetitive in parts.

I took this on a two week holiday and it definitely changed my life - a step up in productivity and focus, goal are clearer and it was easier to communicate them to my family and friends. The journey is a step by step walk through with case studies and easily implementable actions. A productivity multiplier!!

An excellent book - clear and well written with action steps so at the end of the book you have actually created the plans and started working them. If you struggle with getting stuff done - particularly the strategic stuff that is so easy to push back when the daily nitty gritty takes hold - this is the book to work through.
