There's an awful lot wrong with this Amazon-published book.

This purports to be a book aimed at super-selective Maths, published by something called the '11+ company'. The 11+ Company have zero credentials when it comes to actual 11+ tests. This worries me. If you don 't know, 'fess up. This is not an 11+ aimed book. It's not a Level 6-aimed book. It's a book of questions that are mostly inappropriate to the age group, accompanied by at times excessively long-winded questions.

Where the CEM 11+ is concerned the most scrupulous thing ANY tutor or publisher can do is to admit to ignorance. CEM make NOTHING available, though the general consensus is that there are lots of Maths and reading comprehension questions on papers, and ongoing tuition might help underlying skills.

This book goes one better. It purports to be an 11+ resource, and then dissociates from all 11+ exams.

This book is not only ridiculously inappropriate as an attempted inclusion on the 11+ bandwagon, it is erroneous. Question 25, featuring a pattern involving the overlapping of right-angled triangles does not result in acute angled triangles, but rather 3 smaller right-angled triangles.

Explanations are long-winded, questions are daft. A poor and 11+irrelevant resource that's attempting to cash in on parental insecurity.

As an 11+ resource I'd give this 1star. I got a little mild entertainment out of the questions, though, so I'm being a little more charitable. NOT an 11+ resource. NOT a reliable source of information. Avoid.

If your child enjoys maths then this is for them. It will allow your children to really put there mathematical abilities to good use. I brought this for my son who is well above average for his age in mathematics. He is roughly 3 years ahead than the norm. So, I thought this would give him a challenge.

The booklet has numerous advanced level thought based questions, where you can use a variety of mathematics to solve the answers.
Some are easy, some require you to use thought and reasoning to come up with the solution. As with most mathematics you can come up with the solutions with formulas or just good old reasoning. This is where the book excels, it will make your child asses and reason out the solution.

I will admit it is not your basic 11+ book, it is advanced level 11+ reaching towards 13 I would say. The point of this book is either two-fold, your child enjoys mathematics and mathematical problems or they can whiz through something like BOND Maths 11-12+ papers and they need something challenging.

It has plenty of space after the questions to do any or all working out and the sections are well laid out. Like everything this book will not be for everyone. It is aimed at top level 11+ and the parent or tutor should be adept at maths. As certain problems you need to use algebra, ability to formulate equations and so forth. This all boils down to teaching the child "skill in means". All aspects of life use mathematical principles, from the humble windmill to building Jet propulsion engines.

If you can pique your child's interest in maths and give them the ability see the benefits of how maths is used in real world scenarios, then it makes it easier to give problems to real scenarios.

A challenging set of 30 questions covering a good range of topics and a nice mix of quite quick ones and longer ones. They would be challenging for KS2, 3 or 4 but the actual maths knowledge required is no more than level 5 with a few level 6 topics (although a very mathematically able child could probably solve them simply with level 5 knowledge). The answers in the back are pretty thorough. Very good product for preparing for highly selective schools although you'd want to practice the more straight forward knowledge too with other more standard practice papers.

Too difficult for 11+ students. Some of the questions in the book would be hard for most well educated adults never mind children. It's definitely not for 11+ level. If your child is preparing for GCSE's then this might help but there's no way even the brightest 11+ child could do this degree of mathematics.

This is a VERY difficult book - even for me.. and I did maths A-level! - so I'm not sure it is quite right for the 11+ level. Although if you have a very bright child who is going for a super selective school it's worth looking at as the questions are very different to the usual Bond, Schofield type.
