- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 February 2013I bought this book last Christmas in order for me to get inspired by some of the stories in this book. I was amazed as to how well written and engaging those stories were. I really loved this book because at some point in your life a decision must be made and one of them is knowing whether you have the 'balls' to jump into the entrepreneur world. I've been thinking about business ideas for a long time now (I'm 27 y/o) but never really gone for one of them. I work in digital as a full-time job and I can see on a daily basis how people just come up with businesses online and (in most cases) make a living out of it.
This book really helped me go for it. It just makes you realize how simple an online business can be. It's the perfect platform to discover whether your idea will triumph or not in no time (and no cost). I believe there are many people in my situation, wanting to go solo but not having the time or motivation because of your full-time jobs. This book comes in handy because it aso demonstrates that you can start small, very small and just keep meeting people at events, go to online meetups, co-working and networking spaces.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who desires to change his daily life at least a little bit for the better.
PS: I decided to buy this same book to my father because even though hes been there and done it, a little reminder of how the business world really starts of it's no harm to anyone. Moreover, he absolutely loved it!
Thanks,
Chris Guillebeau
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 January 2013The $100 start-up is a great book for anyone starting any business at any level. Why do I say this? Because whether you are investing less than $100 or over a million somethings are always going to be true.
The book outlines using case studies different steps you can and often should take when developing a start-up. I like the fact that Chris uses multiple different business types and isn't just writing from his own experience - although we benefit from that also. He doesn't claim the book is always right all the time for every business. But that is what I like about it. It is very prescriptive without saying that the same prescription will cure all ills. In fact the book shows many cases that the same approach went different ways.
One of my favourite concepts is the Hollywood launch. This is also outlined in another great start-up book ReWork: Change the Way You Work Forever. It gives a no nonsense achieveable way to launch a product or service step by changeable step.
Mostly the reason to buy this book is it shows you can do it too. And not in a cheesy over the top love fest kind of way. But in a practical get your hands dirty and don't risk having to pawn the kids kind of way.
So if you are even tempted to start something for your self this is a good book to have on the shelf. Preferably take it down and read as well though!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 April 2024I bought this book because I have been thinking about starting a business for some time. And I can definitely recommend this book! The book stands out through its pragmatic approach with many examples without the typical "get rich quickly" promise. It is about being embracing uncertainty when starting a business and achieving a big impact with minimal resources.
The best part of this book are the diverse examples that help you to think about your ideas.
Personally, 'The $100 Startup' helped me get closer to understanding and pursuing my entrepreneurial dreams. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a change, no matter how big or small, in their entrepreneurial journey. Even if you do not want to start a business, it is a good read!

this is easy to read, full of concrete advice and guide to start crafting your offer and ensure you'll get clients sooner rather than later.
I love all the various examples and stories shared. great way to remember the dos and donts as you start. It makes things way more easy to grasp.
I truly enjoyed this book, how easy, comprehensive and real it is.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 May 2021I found the book incredibly frustrating. After about 50 pages in I tried speed reading it. After about 90 I’d just about had enough. The problem is there’s just about nothing useful I hadn’t read elsewhere. There were two or three things which I greatly appreciated being reminded of but the odd titbits that I did come across were buried in so much chaff that I don’t think I can bear to fight my way through any more of it. The case studies get very samey and stop adding anything to the message after the first few. I read the 4HWW many times. I thought about it everyday for years. I’ve read a number of other books in the same vein and got something really significant from most of them. I really had high expectations for this one, not least because I first read about it on Tim Ferriss’s blog. I don’t like to be so negative. I’m sure the book could be pared down to perhaps a fifth of its length and be quite good. The other thing is if it was the first book on this kind of thing I’d read then I’d probably quite like it. But I’m approaching forty, my sixth child is due in four weeks and I don’t have time for ‘infotainment’.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 October 2024This book has the power to transform your thinking into immediate action. There are inspiring stories of people to learn from. You will notice some change within yourself after reading this book.

david h.Reviewed in the United States on 27 May 20245.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book with true, actionable guidelines/tips
I got this book from the library and liked it so much that I bought it. I thought I might write out highlights and steps, but there is too much to do that. That said, it is not an overflow of too much information. I have read books that are hard to follow, hard to pinpoint where to start, what to do next. It is just information vomit.
This book is extremely well written, interesting, easy to read. It is succinct in its advice, and orderly - there isn't an overload of text in haphazard placement and order. I wanted to have this book as I get my business set up and on their way. I want to have the best chance I can to do the best job I can, to give it a good and honest go. I believe this book is going to help me immensely.
