Handy little book with all the recipes you need to make quick scrumptious home baked goodies. Had to have the book after reading it at a friends!

I found this book very cheap in the supermarket so I decided to give it a try. The recipes seem interesting if not incredibly innovative but then... the book cost hardly anything. I am sure that I will find some favourites when I start trying out the recipes. There are a few problems though. Measuring butter in tbspoons is rather odd but my take on it is that the recipes were first published in the US where they don't normally use kitchen scales still... if you adapt to the British market you should tell us the measurements in metric (they also come in imperial). Another thing is the use of a hardcover book for the kitchen. I don't really like them because they become very bulky and the loose cover is a bother so I mostly throw such extra covers away. A cookbook should above all be practical! Then on page 72 the ingredients call for golden syrup but the text for dark corn syrup, again.... an American ingredient! On page 80 the recipe calls for soft margarine. I am not sure whether the dangers of eating margarine were already widely known back then but they sure are now so it is not good to buy a book in 2014 where margarine is still advised.

My biggest problems arise in the section: Healthy Options. We knows that with so much contradictory information about what constitutes healthy eating nowadays it is risky to include such a section also because more often than not what is preached commonly is wrong (think margarine as being good for your arteries, artificial sweeteners to lose weight, low fat advertised as healthy....). Some of these recipes are gluten-free, for example but are they healthy? Yes, for people who have a certain illness, for the rest of the population gluten probably doesn't make a difference. Most of us have eaten a few cupcakes without a problem.

The book has a lot of great and interesting recipes, most of them are delicious and others are quite odd but somehow work. My main problem was with the measurements; the amount of butter for a recipe was in tablespoonfuls - this is very weird and made the amount of ingredients needed for the cakes quite vague and more difficult to judge. Also, the wording in some of the recipes is not very good, the instructions aren't always clear.
