Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Contained in five CDs in card sleeves, from the instantly recognisable "Ride of the Valkyries" to less familiar titles which once heard will still strike chords, 100 Popular Classics delivers exactly what it promises on the box. Everything here is tuneful and accessible, the selections concentrating upon such composers as Beethoven, Mozart, Puccini and Tchaikovsky. Other than that, disc 3 explores the 20th century with works such as Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings and Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, the music isn't sequenced to any particular plan. Indeed, with a Chopin piano prelude following Verdi's "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves" and Grieg's Norwegian Dance no. 2 leading to an extract from Bach's double violin concerto, if ever a set of CDs was made to go in a multi-changer player, this is it. The selections themselves vary from older recordings with leading orchestras, to newer recordings with lesser known, often East-European ensembles. There is no information about the music itself, but setting these discs on random play offers much the same experience as listening to Classic FM, but without all the chat, commercials and news bulletins. And if this leaves you longing for more, try 100 Popular Classics Volume 2. --Gary S Dalkin

This CD threw a blanket over many of the Classics I had identified to add to my collection and also introduced me to many more. If you are new to classical music - it is ideal for sampling a wide variety of artists: it provides over 6 hours of pleasure - where else could you get that for the price! Superb!

This is a fantastic album for classical music lovers and those new to the scene! I was absolutely astonished and amazed by the range and quality of the selected tracks. Although the CDs comes in a cardboard box with cardboard sleeves, I could not have expected more for the cost of the set. In addition, the tracks' lengths range from approximately 3 to ten minutes each - fantastic! I will be recommending this set to friends and family alike!

I do not normally listen to classical music but I have to say the selection of tracks on this cd would pursuade anyone to listen to this type of music more often. The word popular is the key here. This cd is really for the philistines that are as of yet uninitiated with classical music. So if you are new to this it's got all the catchy numbers which are sure to insentivise you to delve more deeply into the classical genre of music.

This 5 CD set delivers everything you expect from the title. It is an inexpensive way to obtain 6 hours of music covering most of the major composers and the most significant pieces of music. For classical novices such as myself, it is great to hear pieces that you only previously knew from TV adverts or themes and to find out what they are actually called. Plus you really can't beat the price. The only disappointment was that it does not include the ever popular Canon in D Minor by Pachelbel. Never mind, put them all in your CD changer, crank up the volume, and scare the neighbours.

As a person who has a very limited collection of classical music, this collection of 5 cd's at such a great price was the perfect way for me to start a collection. Within the collection is a varied number of composers, many I'd heard of, e.g Mozart and Beethoven, and some I hadn't, e.g Carl Orff. Also, the styles of music are just as varied, from orchestral peices and choral works, to instrument solos and duets. There is music to uplift and music to soothe. I was very pleased and impressed with the value and quality of the recordings and am now adding to my collection.

I bought this CD mostly because of the price and was reallly surprised at the quality.
It has all the popular tunes which everyone knows and others which are equally well selected.
Anyone who is new to classics can do a lot worse than starting here, don't bother with the branded compilations which a fraction of the music.
All we need know is a nice relaxing Sunday morning and I will be in heaven!

I cannot describe how important this cd is to my ever changing mood of life. I went on to amazon.co.uk to find, maybe a cd from a composer, thinking that a powerfull compilation like this, with such depth and quality, would cost in the region of 30 pounds. When i found this, it was quite superb. Under 10 pound and probably the only classical cd you will ever need, if you are the hardcore classical fan, or like me, simply the occasional classical listener, to harmonise with the sounds of mozert, and wagner. in short, you must have this cd, it really can change your perspective of classical music. And 5 cds, what an absolute bargain.
