FUN LOVIN CRIMINALS 100% Colombian (1998 UK 13-track CD album including Love Unlimited Big Night Out & The View Belongs To Everyone picture sleeve)
On their second album, Huey, Fast and Steve--the fun loving power trio from New York--return with all the charm and good humour of a smooth talking rattlesnake. Seductively sensual tunes and a slow hip-hop groove melt under Huey's whispering voice on tracks like "Love Unlimited", which pays homage to the love machine that is Barry White. Still not taking themselves too seriously, the album is full of wry observation and good-natured humour. On the lively "Big Night Out"-- Queen's epic "Bohemian Rhapsody" updated for the 90's--a latin jazz rhythm melds with gospel accompaniment before breaking into hip-hop merriment as the infamously cheeky chorus mocks their supermodel conquests. There is still room for the hard rocking, hard living tales of the street and "Southside", with it's dark metal riffing, reminds us once again exactly what it means to be a Fun Lovin' Criminal. --David Trueman

This album is brilliant, the songs are soulful. Perfect accompaniment to my car journeys. My favourite song has to be We Are All Very Worried About You.
When they're good, they're very good. 'Up On The Hill' is an outstanding track. Not only does it create a nostalgic picture of the streets of New York, it does so to a soundtrack so smooth it defies belief. The bass works as a team with the slow drums to make a sound so laid back it could make the worlds politicians kick back and light up a joint.
'Love Unlimited', 'Sugar' 'We're All Very Worried About You' 'The View Belongs To Everyone' 'Back On The Block' all maintain the same laid back style and all to the same impressive effect. The humorous nature of the lyrics and carefree nonchalance of the music disguise the fact that the group are a lot more talented than they first appear. There is an interesting use of diverse instruments to very good effect; it takes accomplished musicians to create the jazzy sound FLC have.
There are one or two poor tracks however, namely '10th Street' and the terrible 'Southside', where the jazz is substituted for a heavy rock sound, and ends up looking out of place and clumsy, and spoils the mood of the album.
Another criticism would be, that within all the smooth jazzy ensembles, there is a distinct lack of marketable songs; there aren't any potential singles, which I think could have made this album one of the greats of the decade, rather than a cult favourite.
A great album, nonetheless, it makes superb chill out music, and if you're a fan of modern jazz, a good addition to your collection.
"MINI BAR BLUES", this is thoughtful, and remnisent of Manhattan influenced, 40's bars.
I highly recomend this album and their previous album's. DOLCE,SIMPATICO,PROFONDO,PENSIEROSO,ET FAR FURORE, if only Huey was Sicilian, but I still like him.

Witty and cool; gangster rap without the gangsta and without the self-centred claptrap rap. A classic out in its own fieldPublished on 1 Jun. 2014 by Micky Green Eyes
Having heard the singles from the first album (scooby snacks etc.) I wasn't a huge fan of FLC. So when a friend insisted on playing their second album I wasn't impressed; but I... Read morePublished on 10 May 2003
