That's an awful lot of hats for all ages and sexes, but there are only 10 knitting patterns. Best hats by far are by designer Harpa Jonsdottir. Hats cover all manner of knitting styles and techniques. Although I have to say that this book would be far better if it had more patterns, some of these can be knitted by any adept knitter just by looking at the pics. 1000 wonderful hats for men, women and kids all beautifully photographed in color. The author has picked her 10 favorites and gives patterns for them. The (rightful) first place goes to a gorgeous pixie hood covered in embroidery that takes the breath away.

Then there's pictures of EVERY hat you can imagine- berets, cloches, hoods, crochet hats, stocking caps (long hats that dangle), beanies, hats with earflaps and some amazing 'sculptural shaped' headwear.

I was particularly struck by the pink hat shaped like a brain; a lace veil; a kids' hat with a tarantula on...

An able knitter could undoubtedly adapt some of the basic ones to their own patterns. And the author includes e-mail addresses for each of the designers so it may be possible to contact them for any patterns you want.

A gallery for the hat maker!

I was warned that this book only contains 10 hat patterns, and 990 pictures. This isn't a bad thing, but it isn't obvious from the cover :(
