Be aware of it's limitations

I gave this rating because of it's limitations. Bear in mind that there is a time delay of at least 15 minutes before it updates because of the FM signal so don't come to rely on it fully to get you out of trouble. Having said that it does inform you instantly if there are known problems ahead on your route,and the Garmin instructions on my Nuvi 2200 states that it will try to steer you around these problems if possible. I've not had it long enough to put that to the test.. Altenatively, you can manually tap an AVOID button.
Interestingly, it will show you all the problems currently happening around the country such as roadworks .closures,accident's etc..
Finally,I would recommend this if you are thinking of buying one as it completes why you bought a sat nav in the first place.

Great product, plug and play

Bought this specifically for a trip to Belgium, it really is plug and play. My Garmin 550 detected the signals straight away and helped us avoid sitting at the back of a long queue. On the one occasion I ignored it we had to drive very slowly on to the M25, so lesson learnt.
The 550 shows when it has a signal and there are no delays, or the number of minutes and location of the blockage, e.g. Derby 2 minutes.
Even in Europe all worked great and eased the stress of driving and navigation in an unfamiliar situation.
Only two negatives which prevent 5 stars - the price, and the fact that I think this sort of equipment should be included with the original purchase.

It did everything as described on the box!
Some roads in outer London are not covered by the traffic monitoring camera's, so although there is no indication of dense traffic, the reality is that the route is slow!

Good when works, but patchy reception

Once it is working, it shows you any hold-ups on your entire route so you can plan ahead - however, a five minute delay in a 100 miles may well have cleared before you get there. The main issue I have is that it seems to take quite a long time to pick up any traffic information, once found then it works well. Not needed to try the avoid button yet.
