Manufacturer's Description

The DAS401 is a compact RAID tower that utilises the latest SATA II port feature, where one single eSATA cable connects up to four (3Gbps) SATA II Hard Drives. Designed with easy installation in mind, the trayless DAS401 allows instant installation by simply inserting the hard drives after opening the protective, ventilated cover.

The DAS401 supports JBOD and spanning modes for instant storage expansion. It also supports RAID 0,1,0+1, 5 and 5 + spare via the included software utility, for high performance and hard drive redundancy.

The package also includes a 2-port eSATA PCI express card, which allows the connection between two DAS401 units, using only two cables.

Great drive expansion unit

the box is metal, its shinny black.
I didnt want raid so I installed the driver & not the raid software and vista see's the drives as if they were connected internally.
well made, comes with every thing needed.

a lot smaller than i thought it was going to be.

bit noisey but nothing more than you would expect having drives spinning inside it and a fan at the back.

would have liked to have seen some silcon dampners but may have increased heating.

its a great box, just works, comes with half hight card (plus full height plate) so if its something you need you wont find better at this great price.

Reliable and good value

well it just worked straight out of the box. It is easy to change drives, there's no caddy, they just slot in. The included drive works fine on Windows XP machines which is what we're running although I have had problems on Mac machines with this model of card. At £134 you can't really go wrong.

Edge10 customer service - excellent

I don't understand what this other reviewer is talking about, if Paul Lancaster is still with Edge10 the technical support he offered to me was exceptional. I called his mobile phone late on Friday afternoon and he talked me through the set up of my unit and exactly how to use it. In my opinion Edge10 technical support is exceptional. In fact I am now buying my second unit as the other is so good and works very well. My advise, call and speak with Paul Lancaster.

Good NAS alternative

Got two of them running, little bit noisy but a good cheap alternative for a NAS. Initially some problem after pc coming out of sleep but fixed that with a workaround.

The enclosure seemed to offer what I was looking for at a very good price.

Unfortunately only one of the four drive bays functioned when it arrived.

I called the EdgeStore customer support line but got no answer; again 30 minutes later and no answer and again 30 mins after that and got no answer. When calling for the fourth time the phone was engaged (i.e. off the hook) and it stayed this way for the rest of the day.

The next day followed the same pattern.

Customer service and support is important to me. If it is important to you then this and any other product from EdgeStore is to be avoided like the plague.

DAS401 4 bay enclosure

Plugged in The DAS401 to my mac pro using the provided esata card, and although it did see the drives at first, after 5 minuets the mac pro froze, this happened every time the DAS401 was connected. I tried downloading other drivers from the site recommended but nothing worked. Also one of the drive bays failed. It seemed a poor product that dose not do what it says on the box so it was returned. If you have a mac running OSX 10.6.4 I would not recommend this product. I have now bought an ICYDOCK 4 bay enclosure which is better built and is working fine over USB.

could not get it to work with asus p5q win 6 x64

Tried several times to get this to work on my pc (asus p5q, win 7 x64), updated the firmware of the supplied esata card, but same result windows would freeze (with or without disks attached). Also think it damaged a new hard disk as tested the hard disk directly attached to pc, but would not spin up.

Wouldn't Work

I couldn't get this to work at all. I tried it on 2 desktops and 1 laptop running Windows 7, Vista and XP and it wouldn't work. The best I got was to see one of the four drives I had installed. I got a full refund from Amazon and replaced this with a DROBO which worked first time without any hassle at all. By the way I am an IT professional so I know what I am doing.
