However, in the spring of 2020 as the world fell under the horrors of COVID-19, life, as we knew it, came to an end.
The British government announced a series of support packages – described as, “Unprecedented” and although support was very generous to many, it was not world-beating or in any measure the best.
Billionaire Chancellor Rishi Sunak famously announced that, “No-one will be left behind… or without hope”. Yet that is exactly what proceeded to happen to some three million UK tax payers.
In a time when it is rightfully abhorrent to discriminate against anyone due to their sex or race, religious beliefs or any other number of long-since taboo factors, the UK government went out of its way to discriminate against people solely due to their chosen, entirely legal and in my case, actually encouraged by the government, method of earning a living.
Imagine going through the entire pandemic with all the worries of ill-health, death, worries for the future but on top of that, be unable and often legally not allowed to work but not receiving any government support whatsoever. Whilst, at the same time, others were helped time after time after time. If such a series of events were to happen in a far-off country there would be widespread outrage and condemnation by governments and opposition alike and yet here we are, over a year later since the first virus cases hit the UK - and nothing has changed.
The government narrative would like you to believe that everyone has been helped. Yet the three million members of the club that no-one wanted to join, say differently – we tell the stories of ever worsening, poverty, debt, homelessness, discrimination, persecution and suicides.
£xcluded Voices is a compilation of accounts of what may well be the last great state act of deliberate discrimination. It's told by the normal, everyday people that were once known as 'the back-bone of the British economy'.
Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak and many more might label us as fraudsters or even deny our existence and Sir Keir Starmer may not care of our plight but history will tell a different story. One day people will look back at this less-known but deliberately enacted government policy disaster of the Coronavirus epidemic and wonder how it could happen in the third decade of 21st Century Britain.
It is to the eternal shame of everyone who decided to ruin three million lives and also those others who were so well supported by the state they chose to look the other way.

About the author

Featured on the BBC and Bloomberg TV, best-selling author Stephen Liddell was born in Carlisle, the United Kingdom in 1973 and currently lives just outside London.
As a qualified and still reasonably young historian, Stephen recently wrote the acclaimed Lest We Forget - A Concise Companion to the First World War published by Endeavour Press of London as well as a related WW1 Photoguide to the Western Front entitled In the Footsteps of Heroes. 2015 saw the release of '101 Most Horrible Tortures in History' which reach #2 on Apple iBooks Europe history charts.
He is the author of the 'The Timeless Trilogy' comprising of 'The Promise', 'The Messenger' and 'Forever and Until'. Other works include the humorous travelogue, 'Planes, Trains and Sinking Boats' and the Kindle 3-section Amazon #1 ranked 'How to Get Rich from Airbnb' which he wrote after successfully running one of the top Airbnb listings in the U.K.
2016 has seen the release of V1 Vixen, a vigilante pulp noir thriller with a strong female lead set on the mean streets of London.
Stephen has also written for prestigious environment publications such as Terra Green in India and The Huffington Post in the U.K and U.S.A. as well as regular updates to his blog. He is currently working on a vigilante themed novel and Star Trek guide.
Stephen has always enjoyed travelling and adventure which is the inspiration of several of his books but, of course, is a romantic at heart and this is clear to all to see in the Timeless Trilogy. He also loves all things history with an MA in the subject from SOAS, London University.
At the of 39 Stephen decided to pursue his dreams and left the corporate world to concentrate on writing. Stephen can also be found giving private guided tours around the historic and cultural sights of London and southern England with his new start-up company Ye Olde England Tours.
The last year has seen Stephen expand his career into broadcast media with appearances on BBC Radio and Bloomberg Television with an option for a short story to be filmed by Channel 4 Television.
