4.0 out of 5 stars A mysterious return 13 Jun. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
'xxxHOLiC: Rei' is the sequel series to CLAMPs entertaining series 'xxxHOLiC', that was one of my favourite manga despite having a rather disappointing ending where it just seemed to run out of steam. The story sees Watanuki back at school with Dômeki and Himawari while working part-time for Yûko at her wish granting shop, helping her deal with the costumers who come to have their wish granted. The main mystery of the series at this point however is how it connects to the original and there are a few hints here and there throughout this first volume as well as the return of one of the plot threads left hanging at the end of the original series.

The decision to return the series to its roots is an interesting one and although it may cause a bit of confusion for some readers I feel that it was a good move and adds a nice level of interest as I am very excited to see how the series plays out. The change also means that the series is probably a bit more open to new readers than it would otherwise have been (although some references may be lost on them and the series does skip some of the series setup). The artwork for the series is in the typically beautiful style of CLAMP and, in my view, has some simply stunning images at various points, it is just a shame that those pages that were originally in full colour have been reproduced here in black and white.

The translation for the series is generally good with the retention of the Japanese honorifics as well as some nice translation notes at the end.

Overall this I think this was a good return for the series and although it probably isn't at as good as the original at this point, things are definitely looking interesting and if nothing else it is good to see all the old characters again. I personally feel this first volume of 'xxxHOLiC: Rei' is worth a good four and a half stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another favourite back 17 Oct. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Didn't know this was coming out until the other day. If you've read the original series then you'll easily enjoy this with its little hints at a deeper meaning behind the story. While this was listed as a sequel to the original you don't expect it to suddenly return to the past story however you can pick up that there is something else going on with the story. As for what it is I don't know, but that's part of the fun of this series, you just can't put it down.
The artwork is the traditional Clamp style, simple but very nicely done with its own flare. As for the story in this chapter there are two separate ones, the first is a pair of women connected with phone charms while the other is Watanuki hearing voices, which hints at the before mentioned deeper meaning to this new series.
Role on November for the second part of many I hope.

5.0 out of 5 stars A return to a great story 3 May 2014
By Aitwo
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I will say that I love CLAMP, so my review may be a tad bias.

This book is a return to the series. Old fans who have read the series from beginning to end may think that this rewind in the story as all the characters return, the stories are brilliant, but hints of a something deeper running through them all.

I recommend that anyone who has read the first series to pick up Rei - I doubt you will be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Return to the World of xxxHolic... 10 May 2014
By Ellen W. - Published on
...I swear I was going to use that for my review title even before I learned that the "Rei" in "xxxHolic Rei" means "return" (I'd call it a coincidence, but we all know what Yuuko-san would have to say about that). The story appears to take place somewhere in the middle of the story, before Watanuki encounters the Jurogumo, before he learns the truth about Himawari-chan... before Yuuko-san disappears. She's still the proprietor of the shop here, still helping customers, like two best friends with identical phone-straps who don't know why they keep visiting.

But things might not be what they appear. I'd heard before I read this volume that the story took place in the middle of "xxxHolic," but even then, I had my suspicions that CLAMP might be up to something (because it's CLAMP, they're always up to something). At first, it seemed like I might be wrong. Then, somewhere in the second chapter, I noticed a glaring omission that had been hiding in plain sight the whole time. And the stories here call to mind episodes from the original "xxxHolic." Finally, the second arc in this volume seems to be setting up a plot, a mystery, that will run through the rest of the story. I already have my own theory about what's going on, and I'm hoping this will turn into a resolution for Watanuki (because the ending of the original kind majorly left him hanging). The episodes in this volume weren't as good as some of the ones in the first series, but I'm seriously looking forward to seeing where this goes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Return of the best of xxxHolic 19 May 2014
By Marron Grosbek - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This new series from Clamp revisits the "normal" days of Watanuki and his mentor, Yuuko. Before the bad things start to happen. Of course, Domeki and Himawari play strong roles. These are the days of Watanuki's training, where Yuuko exposes him to strange events, one after the other, and he gradually learns the ways of Clamp's special style of magic.

In this volume, Yuuko looks younger than ever, to the point where she could be a love interest for Watanuki. I like this new tension between the pair. The stories are all engaging and pleasant. As hungry as I am for more xxxHolic, this volume delivers the meat!

I hardly have to say that the art is fantastic! As always. Clamp has multiple drawing styles, and I love the art-deco style used in XXXHolic. Slightly exaggerated slim and long bodies. Long legs. Everyone is a fashion model! Impactful facial expressions. From cute to comic slapstick to deadly serious, the artwork demonstrates just how flexible Clamp can be without ever taking a player out of character! Clamp takes no short-cuts! Every page is drawn with care and expertise.

For newbies, this volume gives sufficient background so you can start reading right now. Later you can decide if you want to go back to read the first series. For experienced readers, I heartily recommend everything Clamp has ever produced, excepting perhaps their first series Rayearth. XXXHolic is the best of all Clamp's series in terms of comedy and artwork.

If you've already read and loved xxxholic, then my next recommendation is Tokyo Babylon. Out of print but easily obtained.

4.0 out of 5 stars A welcome return, with the quality intact! (Spoiler-free review!) 1 May 2014
By Jim Dandy - Published on
If you've read the old xxxHOLiC start to finish like all good little boys and girls do, you're probably wondering what this is. Is it a sequel? A prequel? And my answer is NO, it takes place sometime in the middle of the original xxxHOLiC. What we get is simply more stand-alone stories of the same kind that we read about in that series. People come to Yuuko's shop with problems that need solving. And both the art and the writing is just as good as it was there, so by all means give this a try if you liked that one.

3.0 out of 5 stars For hard-core CLAMP fans only 6 Aug. 2014
By Lost in Space - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is really only for the hard-core CLAMP fans, and you had to really love xxxHolic to love this.

By the 2nd half of the original xxxHolic I'd lost interest. I read this out of curiosity, but there's really nothing new here or of interest to new readers. It is clearly aimed at CLAMP's hard-core fanbase.

For those who loved the original series right up to the end, by all means buy this. You will continue to love it. It has everything the old series had, including the same art style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spooky Good! 28 Nov. 2014
By Mike Keepper - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
XXXHolic is a collection of episodic spooky tales involving various paranormal activities. The art is spare but beautiful with lots of detail here and there especially in some of backgrounds. The human figures are rather elongated and a bit jarringly lanky but you get used to it. The stories are mystical and satisfyingly spooky. Great continuation of the XXXholic original series!
