Hi all. Got my tablet yesterday and very pleased with it. Got it set up and running well thanks to this great forum and the search button. However, I just cant get my download speed past 1mb. Upload speed is 1.5-2mb. I can get 20mb+ on other devices in the house.
I have changed wifi channels on my router (virgin media hub) to a different channel. This has helped with the strength of signal but not speed. I was going to try and select static ip on tablet but I have no such option. I go to advanced wifi settings on tablet and see IP address but it is greyed out and nothing can be selected. Im running ICS which came with tablet. Any ideas why speed is so slow?
Many thanks to everyone that has helped out here, it has made things much easier for me.
I don't think its a good idea to be comparing the wifi speed of this tablet to other devices, The wifi card will be cheap to keep the cost down and I'm not sure why people would want a "premium" speed on a tablet either. Those speed tests are totally unreliable anyway. I've had them report speeds between 5mb and 17mb for this tablet when the real speed seems to be 1mb like yours. This is what ive concluded anyway by observing market downloads
I agree with Rob's view here. I'd be flabbergasted to get a true 20mb+ download from a device like this.
You might find that one of Seby's custom ROMs improves your WiFi throughput by tweaking the buffer sizes, but by no more than twofold, not the order of increase you're hoping for.
And setting a static IP address will do you no good at all with this issue. It can help solve a quite different issue people have with android 2.3, though the real solution for that one is to go to ICS, which you appear to have done anyway.
But if you do want to go ahead and assign a static address for the fun of it, the procedure is actually basically the same with ICS as with 2.3, it's just that the menus are structured differently. Everything you need is in this YT video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VM1oysibgU0 TIP Hold your tab in the vertical (portrait) position as if it was a phone while doing this procedure. Otherwise you won't actually see one of the essential checkboxes which you'll see in that video (which was made on a phone, but the steps are exactly the same).
Thanks loads for the replies, this is a great forum. Just to be clear, I in no way expected to get 20MB from this. I just thought Id get over 1mb at least. I understand the parts inside aren't premium parts. Anyway, after some experimenting last night I can now get around 10MB. I changed my ip to static, made no difference. I then changed my wifi security to wep, changed my channel to 11 ( I had already changed this from 1 to 7 and made no difference. Then found I could now get 10MB download, 2MB upload. Speed tests are unreliable but it is obvious that my speed has increased from going on youtube and loading image intensive web pages. So Im pretty happy now. Everything working as it should thus far.
With regard to Mr Yarrow, I still find the range isn't great. I did find that changing to a different channel in the router settings had an impact though. Hope this helps.
Well, things have changed slightly. Finding the wifi speed very unreliable. Like I said, I was getting around 10-12MB after changing a few router settings. Since then I've found the wifi temperamental. If Im sitting right by the router and start the tablet up I get high speeds. If I move even 10ft away it seems to almost lock onto 1mb. For instance, I could do a speed test and get 10mb, move to another room and get 1mb. Then I could move back to where i got 10mb, do another speed test and still be stuck on 1mb. I then switch wifi off and back on and get 10mb. In the areas where I get 1mb, I can also switch wifi off and on and get an increase in speed. This doesnt last though.
All very confusing. It is really like the tablet locks on to a speed, usually 1mb. Used wifi analyser etc and all rooms get at least a good signal. Out of ideas. To be honest it has taken the shine of the a little. Happy with everything except wifi. Even if I got an average of 3mb I would be happy. I got this tablet mainly for movie watching, youtube, net browsing in bed. It is really close to being perfect. I don't think I'm expecting too much. My iphone and ipod gets an average of 8mb in all rooms in the house. Not expecting that, but higher than 1mb would be nice.
Youtube was close to useless earlier. Not sure what to do about this. Anyone having a similar experience?
Mine works fine with browsing, youtube and tv streaming. Torrent speed download will be low, normal download is about 380kb/s, same as my laptop, triple what you for a tv player. Try a different router channel maybe? There is no reason your tablet should physically have a problem with youtube, though I have notice mine struggle with high bit media streaming
Thought I'd keep this up to date as it may be of interest to others. Well, things are more than fine now. It seems this, or my specific, tablet is very sensitive to the virgin hub. Tried it out in a few different houses, all had either virgin media hub or virgin super hub and got a similar bad wifi performance. So, before contacting customer support, I tried one more thing. I connected my old virgin D-link router to the media hub. Set that up using instructions found using Google, turned off wifi on hub. So now the d-link is supplying wifi to my house. The difference is amazing. I went from a strong 10MB next to hub to 18MB. I also went from under 1MB upstairs in bedroom to an average of over 10MB, sometimes up to 16MB. It is holding steady thus far. I didn't even have to mess about changing channels etc. Very happy to see apps downloading in a few seconds instead of minutes. Can't be happier with this tablet now. Great bargain. Thanks for all replies.
So, anyone with a virgin media hub or super hub might want to take notice. Hope this is of help to others.
Yes the virgin super hub can be troublesome. My dad is using it along with his Sonas system and is giving him major problems. However I do know that it is very easy to turn super hub into modem mode, use a good seperate router and problems should go concerning wifi.
I am getting all kinds of problems with the latest iPhone and HTC Flyer in connecting to my BT Hub. Called BT but they seem incapable of getting things right. Sorry that I don't have anything constructive to suggest. I have just ordered one of these for my son and will post if I have anything useful to add once we have tried it.
