June 1940. Villeneuve village in central France, is upset by the arrival of the German army. Hortense, John, Raymond, Marie were then French and ordinary French ... they become patriots, traitors, collaborators or resistant. Rules imposed by the German occupation match those of civil disobedience or underground. We are afraid, we are hungry, we will tear the name of values and a certain idea of France ... or sometimes just out of love.

... but you will have noticed that there is no information provided on the availability of sub-titles in English. I have seen episodes of the series on French TV and it is indeed excellent, with a wide range of well known actors. But even in France subtitles in French are only available for the first series and when I enquired it seems that even those aren't provided for the second and further series, which for me (and for deaf people in France)is a great disappointment. Perhaps these DVDs have subtitles but I'd advise you to be sure before handing over your cash. The absence of any such information from Amazon to me speaks volumes. If you speak excellent French then I would urge you to buy it, I'm sure you will not be sorry.

I found it amusing that the first DVD I popped into my player had an anti-piracy warning since getting subtitles for this series is an "after market" affair. There are subtitles availble on the internet. Not the best, but subtitles nontheless.

And they are free.

Unfortunately, the DVDs don't make it easy to use the subtitles since there is copy protection which makes it hard to use something like VLC media player to watch them (and load the subtitle track). Although, one can download the subtitle file from the internet, which makes me wonder why the people who sell the disks didn't put them on in the first place. After all, there was an article in the New York Times that praised this series.

Don't complain about piracy as a reason for losing sales if you are not catering to the marketplace. Especially if the customer has to go elsewhere for the subtitles!

I found mine here:
