Product Description

Product Description

The Dambusters' mission is of enduring fascination and appeal. The breaching of the dams in Germany's industrial heartland was to have a pivotal effect - a triumph for Allied thinking and courage, it convinced Roosevelt to commit to the invasion of Italy and the countdown to the D-Day landings. Sixty years on, The Dambusters is the definitive telling of one of World War Two's most remarkable episodes. The book describes how it was down to the ingenuity and persistence of a scientific maverick, Barnes Wallis, that the idea of the backwards-spinning bouncing bomb came about and how the pilots overcame the odds to pull off one of the most astonishing military successes in history. Accompanying a major new television series, the book uses contemporary re-enactments to show just what an astonishing feat the mission was. Lavishly illustrated, it captures the brilliance of the scientists and the bravery of the crews, as well as the enormous impact their success had on the outcome of war.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dambusters Fantastic Account, 7 Jan 2007
This review is from: The Dambusters (Hardcover)
The black and white movie was always a good watch, having recently learnt that it is to be remade by Peter Jackson and also having watched a documentary on the raid, I had renewed interest so I did a search to see what material was available

I bought this book just before xmas and tonight finished it, one of the most informative and interesting WW2 books I've ever read, brilliantly conveyed from start to finish

I am now going to buy the CH4 DVD that goes with the book itself, and also learn that the original film is re-issued on DVD this week

This book is very very highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best reads for a long time!, 4 April 2003
This review is from: The Dambusters (Hardcover)
John Sweetman, Gary Johnston and David Coward combine to remake this classic epic. Their modern reworking of the famous World War II mission takes 8 young RAF officers and SNCO's on a crash course in 1940's Navigation, flying and bombing.
They manage to honour the fallen heroes of the original mission
and accurately recreate the challenges they faced to produce an enchanting mixture of triumph and tragedy.
The Airmen and women of 1943 did it for their country........ and became heroes.
The Airmen of 2003 did it to honour those Heroes..........
