I saw this available for download and remembered I bought it back in the late 80s, got it off the shelf, and wham! Mary hit the scene like a bomb back then, smoky and seductive and a complete contrast to squeaky clean Mary Black and Maire from Clannad. This is a whole other kind of Irish music, from behind the convent school bike sheds, and her on-stage demeanor, with whiskey and cigarette in either hand, suggested the songs came from personal experience. Originally on a small Irish label called Mystery Records, this was picked up by WEA and she went on to make two more albums for them before, sadly, the whiskey started to take over and the performances became more erratic and the voice started to go. However, if you like what I or the other reviewers here have said, invest the money on this and the follow-up 'Under the Influence'. You won't be disappointed and may, like me, be totally knocked out. Thanks for the memories, Mary.

Mary Couglan's first album. Not her jazziest or bluesiest but maybe her freshest. Lacking some of the edge of the later stuff, but certainly no hymns. When she sang 'I wanna be seduced', she was surely wearing stockings.

The final track on this CD is simply amazing and it's worth getting just for "Seduced". But that's not the only great thing about the album, there's fun and laughter, sadness and whimsy, and bluesy and gutsy. The arrangements are simple (and all the better for that) and allow Mary's magnificent voice to come to the fore. An excellent debut album and a fine introduction to one of Ireland's finest singers. Buy it, and buy another copy for someone you love.

I first heard this album about 20 years ago and had it on tape, but lost it. For years I looked for the album on cd but couldn't remember Mary coughlan's name or the album title. It took some tracking down over the internet but when I saw it on Amazon I had to have it, with it's smokey bar blues sound. If your not fimiliar with her music then this album is the perfect introduction. Her mix of soul / blues coupled with a sense of playfulness is fantastic, adding her sultry voice with her Irish lilt just makes it heavenly.

This was Mary Coughlan's first album that was released in 1989. I didnt buy this album until i was hooked with her third album uncertain Pleasures. Tired and Emotional is a fantastic album and a must for all Mary fans to have in their collection !
