HELP!

Are you actually online with it? When it tells you that you need an update, you should get an option to download it.

Double check that you are online and that if you are using a router that its working. (if you have an online game quickly try an online match) Any update should require no input from yourself so it sounds like there is a problem with your online capability. The only other thing i can think of is that the download has not installed properly. Have you gone to the file and checked?

Try clearing the cache on you HDD, you should have an option for doing this from the dashboard in your setting's/memory (i think thats right? ) Only problem with clearing the cache is, it can delete 'all' game patches so can be a pain each time you pop in a disk as you'll have to patch it again.
