(Detective, lawyer, forensics expert, FBI agent, etc.)
What about Morse/John Thaw or Dave Creegan/Robson Green for the best and Horatio Caine/David Caruso for the worst?

Oh yes! I must just add Ken Stott to the list. Only the Brits seem to be able to do excellent crime dramas ! I can watch most of them repeatedly and do when I get the opportunity.

Hi my favourite tv detective which have to be Columbo - Peter Falk is perfect in the role. I also think Tom Selleck is great as Thomas Magnum and the four main leads in New Tricks are excellent too. I can't think of any tv detective or actor that I really dislike though.

Jimmy McNulty aka Dominic West, and Bunk Moreland (Wendell Pierce) from The Wire. No contest. (Although John Thaw was pretty good as Morse.)

Yes, I'm a big fan of the British Crime dramas also. My favourite TV detective would have to be the wonderful (now, sadly, dead) DCI Michael Jardine in 'Taggart'. Much missed!

Mr. P. Mullally says:
Morse is best (though I did feel the later episodes weren't so good), Taggart, Monk and Columbo are all right too. I don't like Frost - keep expecting him to say "You plonker Rodney"

JORGE GOUVEIA says:
My choice for best would be : Henry Crabbe/ Richard Griffiths ( Pie in the Sky ) and the Worst would be : David Suchet as Poirot ( Agatha Christie ) . This is not to say that I dislike Poirot , it's that Suchet made a dog's breakfast of his character .

Columbo is my all time favourite. I can appreciate 'Morse' although I found the character, at times, too miserable!

How about Ken Stott in The Vice and Messiah? Brilliant or what? John Hannah in New Street Law? I loved that series. Wire in the Blood with Robson Green (I have never seen Soldier Soldier) which my daughter and I think are absolutely excellent, along with Trevor Eve in Waking the Dead have to be amongst the greatest. At the moment My daughter and I are enjoying Bones which is different to the above but neverthe less worth considering .

David Janssen as Harry O - anyone else remember him? - besides the tv show,I liked it that he got around in a silver blue austin healey sprite, and not the usual wallowing bargemobile. Mind you, Steve Mc Queen as Bullitt had some taste in cars!

I'd have to agree with D. Scott...
David Caruso as Horatio Caine is apalling but as John Kelly in NYPD Blue he's superb! Hands down its gotta be Dennis Franz as the mighty Sipowicz - what a cop!

Penguin Egg says:
John Thaw as Jack Regan. A right bastard and as bad, in many ways, as the criminals he was after.
David Caruso as Horato Caine. His idea of acting is to take his glass off and then put them back on.

Whoa, I am so happy to come on here and I see that I am not the only one who detests what David Caruso believes is acting. Like you said his idea of acting is taking off his glasses and putting them back on. I guess he thinks thats cool but my reaction is just laughter and more laughter because his acting is dismal. I can't watch CSI:Miami because of him and the other lady who has floor length hair and claims she is a CSI. Please someone tell me how you can process a crime scene when your hair is probably contaminating the scene. But truth be told, I don't mind her so much but Horatio Caine wins the title hands down as one of the worst detectives on TV.

Steve says:
hahah sledge was fantastic!
I think my all time favourite is columbo, peter falk makes that character his own, i love the way the audience knows who did it from the beginning and columbo is never far behind us in knowing then the story is more about how he catches them out, it turned the detective "who dunnit" on its head and gave a different angle to a detective series.
