...............would it have the masses rushing to it as an interpretation of the word of God or just be some weird cult like Scientology? Ok so you have to suspend belief to get your head round the idea but isn't that what Christianity is all about.

If it was discovered a couple of years ago it would probably be considered a fantastic resource for historians, archaeological anthropologists, linguists, chemists... and that would be it. Translated, some of it is quite powerful, moving, lyrical... so it would probably find a limited audience of readers interested in antiquarian texts. A couple of museums would probably squabble over who should keep and display it, and there would be a flurry of fundraising to cover the costs of its conservation. It would probably end up being digitised and made available on the net. And then it would cease to be of interest or import except to a few deluded obsessives...

Christianity in its original form wasn't to be a dogma, an organized religion, it was supposed to be a ... mystical transmission of the 'Word of God' by word of mouth (so the 'Word of God' would become alive in people, speaking through people) the 'Holy breath/energy of Christ/Holy Spirit' and an opening to your own heart/soul/conscience, through the help of a few rituals like Baptism and an Apostle who would act like a Spiritual guide. The first Christians did not follow a 'Bible' they followed Christ in person, and then Christ in spirit in themselves, and if nobody had written the Bible that Spirit would still be alive, only without the Bible and the dogma and .... etc ....

It would have the original front page disclaimer that was missing stating that; "The 40 odd writers in 3 different languages among several continents would like to state that any resemblance between characters living or dead is purely coincidental."

Thanks for all three responses. Not unexpectedly the Bible turns out to be the single bigest problem as regards access to spirituallity. One could almost believe that were there such a thing, the devil would have inspired the making of it in an effort to spread confusion amongst the faithful. It's certainly been responsible for it's fair share of repression over the years as have many other holy scriptures.
Whats most unforgivable though is that Bible quoters are generally just so smug and boring.

It could advocate child sacrifice to the spaghetti monster and still be considered the height of intellectual and moral enlightenment if only it could be marketed as being against the "establishment".
