 Toffeeman says:
Having had debates about the best guitarist ever for what seems like an eternity (and spurred on by the recent Eric Clapton thread) I really do believe that it is about time we added a bit of rigour to the eternal question.

Right, this is how we shall do it. Each person will nominate five guitarists, but they must be five different ones from what has previously been nominated.

When the thread has been silent for a 24 hour period I shall publish the list of nominees. Each person will then rate each one with a score of 1 (poor) to 5 (bliss) for each of the following categories:

Trans-instrument dexterity (or in others words you get extra marks for performance on a variety of types of guitar - acoustic, spanish, electric etc etc)

Trans-genre dexterity (or in others words you get extra marks for performance on a variety of styles of music - blues, jazz, folk etc etc)

Style variety (you get extra kudos for playing rhythm, solo-ing, bottleneck etc).

Multi tasking (extra points for singing etc at the same time).

Just a few rules:

To vote on one player you must vote on all of them - to say what's the best you must be familiar with all of them - surely?

To vote on one you must be familiar with them playing live - surely the real test of any musicians ability.

.......and I will take this seriously for as long as other people do.

On second thoughts, you're only allowed five. I guess you want to drop Robbie then. (Just joking.)

 Toffeeman says:
As I said, I'll treat it seriously for as long as others do. (sotto voce...the nominating and scoring really wasn't the point)

 The Liquidator says:
You could take out Steve Howe MIRC, as WP nominated him shortly after yourself.

I would actually like to have included James Dean Bradfield but I don't quite think him worthy of displacing any of my final five
