I have been a fan of Michael Jackson's music since I was a small boy and find it very upsetting and shocking that he has died at such a young age. He was a very nice person who was misunderstood by many people. His music and dancing in the 80's was stunning. I was really looking forward to a big come back because for me he was still the King of pop.

 80's rock fan says:
We were told he had malignant skin cancer and was in hospital currently being skin grafted, i thought they had caught it early and that he would make a full recovery, correct me if im wrong but this must have been something else, how sad especially as his upcoming tour would have been a great last opportunity to showcase michael at his best, now this and his life have been cruelly taken away from him, this is a very very sad day for hundreds of millions of fans across the world.

Hearing that news at midnight was a shock out of the blue. I heard it was a cardiac arrest. Maybe the stress of the last few years took its toll. I guess not since Elvis has a real global megastar gone before his time. Say what you like about the man but he was a phenomenon who made some classic music.

Prince was no competition. Look at MJ's contribution to the world of music. Enough said I think.

Not a fan, and didn't get on with a lot of his work, but Thriller is rightly regarded as a classic.

Hopefully his troubled soul is now at peace.

I think I would like remember him for his fantastic music.

His music formed the soundtrack to much of my life in the 80's and 90's and many of his songs will always hold great memories for me.

Michael RIP

I remember buying my first Michael Jackson album as a child and from that day was a huge fan. He was a genius. He danced like no other and his music was extraordinary. A sad loss.

To those posters actively seeking out this thread to pour scorn over Michael Jackson - shame on you, shame on you :((.

Hooray. All the cynical miserable sods are already crawling out of the woodwork to throw a little more bitter spite and negativity into the world.

Before it inevitably kicks off on these boards, people shouldn't proclaim to talk as if they knew Jackson personally. Indeed he may well have been a freak, a weirdo, mentally unbalanced, he may have spent too much time around children. Or he might equally have been a saint, a humanitarian, a iconic inspiration.

But all any of us know about him and his personal life we learned through the subjective and not-actually-true-to-real-life lens of the media. I didn't know him, so I'm not going to presuppose how or why he died, or what he was really, genuinely like as a person or individual. Nor am I condemning him, or sticking up for him. I've never been a massive fan, but I don't dislike his music either.

One of the main things that I've heard in the last few hours is that no-one really knew the real Michael Jackson, so I can perhaps assume that there's some truth in that.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the eyes of the world. Certainly those who thought the treatment of the death of Princess Diana was over-the-top will no doublt find plenty to irritate them.

It already seems that the media have gone into hyperbolic overdrive in proclaiming him some kind of mortal god on a par with Jesus or Gahndhi. He was ultimately just a human being who happened to be very famous, and capable of dividing opinion to a polar degree.

Was he a child abuser? I don't know. I don't think any one person who will go on to comment on these forums (providing Amazon don't have to pull it) is entitled to say he absolutely categorically was. He was found innocent, and not having any insider knowledge of the ins-and-outs of the whole court case, I'll assume he was innocent.

Although my impression has always been that he was clearly someone who always had a lot of emotional and personal problems that were surely only exacerbated by his status of being one of the most famous people in the world. And certainly the outcome of that abuse scandal did tarnish his reputation almost unassailably, and effectively end his musical career.

As I mentioned a few months back, he hasn't recorded an album in over ten years, and the Invincible album, as I believe was his last studio album, was largeley percieved as a failure. Which makes me wonder why the media was been making claims for the last few hours that the hits and the albums have 'never stopped coming.'

They clearly did stop coming, and indeed will now never come again. Although despite his seeming withdrawal from the world of fame, Jackson was never going to be able to make people forget about him.

I'll leave it to the cynics to make up stories about him faking his own death. Which let's face it, would certainly be a better story than that of his undeniably premature departure.

Here endeth the lesson.
