How Relevant Is The X Factor?

 Neil Bourne says:
Having seen some of the current series of The X Factor and read comments by Sting, among others, i must say that i am constantly amazed at the popularity of the show. In my opinion the acts are no better or worse than you would see at a good karaoke night. Very little creativity is on display, NO original material, just regurgitated pop standards. The hype generated by the media is a fantastic example of mass marketing of a very, very poor product to a gullible public unwilling or unable to demand better. The "Judges" are so fake as to insult the intelligence of anyone with even a modicum of interest in music and constantly bombard us with their "Obvious" superiority and knowledge of the industry. I can't believe how bad the show is but on the other hand i also can't believe how popular it is! My question is WHY? I don't understand it!

How Relevant Is The X Factor? Not very, it's a good sounding board for those who will make it in any case, irrespective of winning. Look what happened to Leon Jackson and conversely, Rhydian Roberts.

the x factor makes a mockery of the music business. i am sick of that tv show deciding who we should like and who should be christmas number 1. i hope jedward win just to show how pathetic the show is. if the acts were so committed into achieving the dream (what a cliche) they would work hard for it like most acts have to. one that springs to mind is snow patrol. yes, they are massively popular now, but weren't truly discovered until there third album, they perservered. unlike this lot that enter a competition because the competition is put on a plate for them, all they have to do is to turn up to an audition. it makes me sick. and proud that im into metal music and rock and indie because i know what i listen to, the bands are true talents.

Just look at the charts, both album and singles!
Leona, JLS, Alex, Cheryl, Black Eyed Peas from last week.
Its entertainment!

One word - money! :-(

I don't watch the foul program, but had to endure excerpts of last evening's "entertainment" in the Harry Hill break. What a crock - a whole bunch of Queen songs massacred by tuneless caterwauling; the only ones less than totally frightful were the terrible twins (and they were bleedin' awful)

I have never seen it & trust I never will, but if it as irrelevant to me as I think, why am I typing this?

It's a no-brainer in terms of musical snobbery. If anyone endures it it's because they're morbidly curious and if anyone enjoys it it's because they may be too open-minded for their own good.

It's not just the X-Factor syndrome - I still think that the top 20 (or whatever) should be re-designated as a kiddies chart. Who over the age of 14 buys or downloads that dreck anymore?

You've obviously got the same 'How to be the master of all that you think is yours' handbook that I've got.

 Shoegeezer says:
It's as relevant today as it was 20+ years ago when Stock, Aitken and Waterman's soulless, mass-produced, "hit factory" churned out one bland act after another, flooding the charts with marketable mediocrity.

No, really. Do actually kill them all.

No, not really, I'm joking.

I'm not, you know.

No, I am.

 spiderboris says:
If you go back and re-read Orwell's 1984 and replace the phrase 'Big Brother' with 'Simon Cowell' then it all makes sense.

Not sure how that works if you try substituting Cheryl Cole or Dannii Minogue, but I'm sure the effect would be the same.

Erm...lighten up folks. You're all too serious at times. If you don't like it you don't have to watch it.

Leona Lewis and Rhydian Roberts for example are both great singers. Roll on 30th November when Rhyd's 2nd album gets released....if it's as good as his 1st album I can't wait....might just treat myself to JLS's album as well...
