Any Giallo fans out there who want to discuss fashion and groovy music and of course sex and murder.

Cropsy - the extremely burned guy from 1981's The Burning - with the garden shears! Now there was a Black Gloved Killer if I ever saw one; terrible complexion mind!

I love giallo movies however very few people know of their existence thus I find it hard to get reliable info on them, could you tell me some of the best ones as I have only seen about 30 or so of the more talked about ones and really want to see more. By the way don't you think it would be great if the Italian film industry started back up again, I could see it now tons of unique films that are worth watching (unlike hollywoods crap selection which consists mostly of Saw sequels and pathetic remakes), cannibals, zombies, giallo and every form of exploitation imaginable. Many thanks in advance for the giallo info and many thanks to Shameless Entertainment for bringing great exploitation movies to the UK stores which otherwise seem to be slightly lacking in non mainstream material.

Hello A.Walker
I've seen about the same amount of giallo films as yourself and started this discussion to find out more! However I can recommend the two booklets Giallo Scrapbooks 1+2 which I am using to build my collection. My present fave is Fulci's Don't Torture A Duckling,it's a shame he never made more films like this as it proves to all his distracters what a talent he was.Yes I love Italian exploitation films and Eurosleaze in general,so I am going to widen the discussion to include all things 60's 70's and 80's produced in Europe. With that in mind, here are a few of to get people started.

A Lizard In A Woman's Skin
The Night Evelyn Came Out Of The Grave
Strip Nude For Your Killer(I also love Bianchi's Nights of Terror,am I the only one?)
Late Night Trains
The Beast In Heat
The House With Laughing Windows
In A Glass Cage
In The Folds Of The Flesh
The Beast
Daughters Of Darkness

I also love Jean Rollins,Argento,Fulci and Bava.

Shameless are doing us proud though I'd like a few extras for my cash.

 A. Walker says:
I loved "Don't Torture a Duckling" and Fulci is my favourite director, I also found "Nights of Terror" (AKA "The Zombie Dead" and "Burial Ground") and "The Beast in Heat" (AKA "SS Hell Camp") both enjoyable although I fear no-one will agree with us. A bit more special features would be nice from Shameless but my main concern is that they continue to edit the films so we keep getting the longest cuts of each release e.g. "The Frightened Woman" and "The Designated Victim". I agree with you on loving Argento, Fulci and Bava films but haven't seen enough of Jean Rollins work to judge him, that said I liked what little I have seen. I believe in give and take and will give you a list of some of my favourite Giallo and a second list extending to other forms of Italian and European exploitation (most of which I imagine you will already know of).

The Case of the Bloody Iris
The Psychic
Murder Rock
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
The Cat O Nine Tails
Four Flies on Grey Velvet (limited to only 1000 german copies)
Profondo Rosso
Tenebrae
Sleepless
Terror at the Opera
A Blade in the Dark
Oasis of Fear
My Dear Killer
Torso
Blood and Black Lace
Twitch of the Death Nerve

SS Girls
SS Experiment Camp
Nekromantik 1 and 2
Schramm
Contamination
Anthropophagus
Beyond the Darkness
The Blind Dead movies (4)
The Ilsa movies (4)
Zombi 2
Zombi 3
The Beyond
City of the Living Dead
New York Ripper
The House of Clocks (part of a series, check out the 3 others)
Touch of Death
Cat in the Brain
Suspiria
Inferno
Phenomena
The Man From Deep River
Cannibal Ferox (I gather from you're name this is one of you're favourites, mine too)
Nightmare City
Cannibal Holocaust
House on the Edge of the Park
Cut and Run
99 Women
Bloody Moon
Stagefright
Dellamorte Dellamore
Pieces
Island of Death
The Slayer
Delirium
Zombie Holocaust
Baba Yaga (are Shameless ever getting round to releasing this one)
Who Can Kill a Child?
Salo
Ratman
Mondo Cane
Possession

There are probably tons of others but none spring to mind at the moment, hope those interest you.

 Count Zaroff says:
A .WalkerThanks for the lists, which Delirium are you refering to;the Lamberto Bava or the jaw dropping one by Renato Polselli?

I would recommend the following Rollins films.
Requiem for a Vampire
The Iron Rose
The Shiver of the Vampire
Fascination
Lips of Blood
The Nude Vampire
The Rape of the Vampire
The Living Dead Girl
and for my sins Zombie Lake

Have you seen any of Fulci's none genre stuff and if so was it any good as I'm keen to watch it after reading Beyond Terror.

In reply to an earlier post on 9 Jan 2009 22:59 GMT
 A. Walker says:
I have seen and enjoyed both Delirium films but was referring to and prefer Polselli's movie. I have seen all of Fulci's zombie films and most of his horror and giallo, other than that I have seen a handful of westerns, a gangster film and a sci-fi. I keep meaning to track down all of his movies but I am always spotting much more movies than I can afford. I would recommend the Fulci's I have seen as even the worst of them were enjoyable on some level but I guess it depends on you're opinion, "Conquest" and "Contraband" are cheap on amazon or at least they were when I bought them about a year ago they are region free and uncut from Blue Underground and are sold together so if you haven't already got them that would be a good place to start as they are definitely different from Fulci's usual style. Also thanks for the Rollin list I'll look into them (when my money allows).

 Count Zaroff says:
A.Walker:it seems we are alone on this discussion, guess everybody is still taken with all that new fangled asian and french horror stuff.Just got the 2 disc Profondo Rosso from Another World Entertainment. It looks amazing, like watching the film for the first time.I also picked up Andrea Bianchi's Malabimba,The Malicious Whore, hope it is better than it's remake Satan's Baby Doll.I see Fulci's Beatrice Cenci is out to buy and The Maniacs is coming soon.I will be getting Beatrice when I'm less credit crunched as I had a 6 dvd blow out at a collectors fair at the weekend.

Have you heard the cd Squadra Gialli? If not,it is a mix of gialli, horror and police thrillers themes.Well worth hunting down, same goes for The Beyond soundtrack with graphic novel and the split Cannibal Ferox/Zombie sound track if you don't already have them.FAB Press is the place to look if you are interested.

In reply to an earlier post on 13 Jan 2009 23:54 GMT
 A. Walker says:
Thanks for all the info I got a german import of Beatrice Cenci early this year and enjoyed it (Fulci supposedly liked it best of all his films), I actually like some of the asian stuff going about, on the surface it seems to be just boring long haired ghost kids but some of the obscure ones are quite good, still no-one beats the Italians. Is the 2 disc Profondo Rosso any better in quality than the US Blue Underground release of it under the title Deep Red. Also why hasn't a third Giallo fan appeared yet, its a little insulting to the genre don't you think. I haven't really got any movie soundtracks besides the ones that came with various DVD's although I love the scores to Italian movies, the main song from "Oasis of Fear" has been stuck in my head all day.

In reply to an earlier post on 14 Jan 2009 00:52 GMT
 Count Zaroff says:
All the review of AWE's Profondo Rosso are saying it's the best yet.Yes,it is insulting to the genre that it appears we are the only two people in Amazonland to like Giallo. That said nobody has posted on my discussion on American trash cinema.I can't believe there is not one fan of bigfoot or naked hippy satanist flicks out there.

Hi, You're not alone. I've just received a copy of Another Worlds "Nothing Underneath". Planning to watch this tonight as I've not seen this 80's giallo in years.
An excellent book with loads of (non-spoiler) reviews is Blood and Black Lace by Adrian Luther Smith.

 Mr. N. J. Voice says:
Italian Giallo/horror has always been a great genre to get into.My collection includes some of what i consider to be the best!
Mario Bavas collection is of considerable note Blood and Black lace(great dvd on a multi region vci entertainment),Bay of Blood and Hatchett for a honeymoon are great also Planet of the Vampires and of course the masterpiece Black mask!

Lucio Fulci's work is great although ive not seen any of his giallo only his horror films of which The Beyond is the standout!
Dario Argento goes without saying but i have yet to see Four Flies On Grey Velvet
and Suspiria is a masterpiece!!!

If you dont already know there is a great book available called Spaghetti Nightmares by Luca Palmarini and Gaetano Mistretta.A collection of interviews with directors and producers such as Argento,Fulci,Luigi Cozzi,Umberto Lenzi,Ruggero Deodato and many others!Worth a look!

 A. Walker says:
Thanks for the info everyone, what does everyone think of Argento's upcoming project simply named "Giallo" will it be a return to form for him or are people already fearing the worst, sure it could be a self referencing dissappointment but I am quite eager to see if Argento can surprise us and restore his reputation with a modern classic (something there are very few of).

I was excited when i first heard of the new Argento project then I remembered Mother Of Tears...I felt Argento had personally cheated me after watching it.Terrible,Terrible film. That said,I'll be one of the first in line to see Giallo.

Just watched Malabimba-The Malicious Whore. Can anybody recommend any other films by Andrea Bianchi other than Burial ground and Strip Nude For Your Killer.

In reply to an earlier post on 19 Jan 2009 19:01 GMT
 A. Walker says:
Andrea Bianchi also done "Massacre" a giallo/slasher released uncut by a Dutch company called EC Entertainment, the movie has Fulci's name attached to it but he claims never to have even met Bianchi. It is an enjoyable movie and I would recommend it however don't expect it to quite live up to "Burial Ground". Also note the film was never dubbed so you will have to put up with subtitles, I hope this doesn't bother you.

In reply to an earlier post on 20 Jan 2009 00:51 GMT
 Count Zaroff says:
Cheers I'll try and hunt it down.Subtitles are not a problem.

I take my black hat and gloves off to you all. I fear I could bankrupt my family looking up all of the films that you mention!
I'm just beginning to get it together with Giallo / Italian exploitation flix. I will definitely avoid Mother Of Tears though, despite my inevitable urge to see it to finish the trilogy.
Keep 'em coming people.

Just watched "Satan's Blood" directed by Carlos Puerto, and I must say what a great film this is.It really racks up the tension, has good satanic ritual scenes and packs in loads of skin which boarder on the erotic rather than pure exploitation.

 JONESY says:
ive got most of Argentos films and i dont think theres a dud amongst them. and that includes Mother of Tears which has its good points although not the best. i am not over keen on The Church and The Sect which although directed by Soavi were co-written by Argento.

 A. Walker says:
This was a really good topic debating some magnificent giallo, wonder why it died? Did some priest kill it to prevent it from growing into a sinner, maybe the topic had a vision of the killer forcing him/her to take action.... or perhaps its that bugger who phones me using that duck voice! Whatever the case I think this one deserves a second chance.

I liked both "The Church" and "The Sect" but they hardly compare to Soavi's debute "Stagefright". I have very recently seen "Satan's Blood" which was brilliant. I can see why so many were dissappointed with "Mother of Tears" as it didn't have a fraction of the appeal of "Suspiria" or "Inferno", as a film I rank it average but that doesn't cut it when you are ending what might be the greatest trilogy of all time thus the understandable frustration.

I got two giallo in a 3 disc set recently one being "Death Walks on High Heels", great film but strange little glitches kept appearing on the screen from time to time and the disc played up even worse in my other player, the release was by US company NoShame, has anyone else spotted this problem or is it just me?

About 3 years ago I went to a Giallo night in a club in Manchester.Loads of clips from films were played and all the music was from giallo/horror soundtracks.

Is Manchester just infinitly cooler than Aberdeen or does my anti-social never leave the house attitude just keep me in the dark about these things?

Had to revive this thread because...

...I've just had my mind blown by Lizard In A Woman's Skin!

...Graphic murders, beautiful women, eviscerated dogs, surrealistic dream sequences, scary swans, demented hippies, psychobabble, atonal whistling, a creepy Alexandra Palace, Morricone on a bad tab (Method soundtracks?)......

I loved it, especially the frantic cinematography which was putting me there one moment, then it WAS Carol Hammond's POV the next.
Extremely strange Giallo, weird and wonderful.
Makes Argento look normal and well-adjusted.

 Count Zaroff says:
Not watching Big Brother then!"Lizard" is truly amazing, along with "Duckling" I feel that Fulci went well beyond genre and could have competed with any director in the world at the time.

I think you've gathered by now my antipathy to BB.
I'll be back here in a few days to give my thoughts on What Have You Done To Solange, which I got today on ebay (my card may be out, but there's still Paypal...)
This thread will never die, as long as I breath and watch Gialli!
