Hi, in January i go on my long awaited one night trip to Hay on Wye. As i'm from Ireland i haven't a clue where to stay to get the best benefit from my short trip. I would love somewhere central to the town that's nice but not too expensive. Any ideas? (Very excited booklover!)

Hi Gwyneth,
I was there in the summer. Most B&B's are pretty much in the centre as the town isn't that big. Here's a link to the Hay website, all the best accomodation is on there. We didn't stay there but The Bear loked very nice and is right in the centre of town.Hope you enjoy your trip. http://www.hay-on-wye.co.uk/accommodation

Hi there - If you do a search on B&B Hay on Wye it comes up with several options, some are expensive as it is a well known tourist spot with all the book shops - I am origianlly from Builth Wells which is not far away and I used to go to School just across the river in Clyro Court School (this is now an hotel). I now live in Orkney which is off the North Coast of Scotland (ferry 90 mins) I am sure you will enjoy browsing the books shops in Hay on Wye, seriously its a shame you have such a short trip, and I would think you will go back
regards Eileen Have a nice trip

I stayed at The Bear last May. It's not cheap but is absolutely lovely and the owners were very pleasant. It's close to all the bookshops and good local pubs and cafes.

Gwyneth, would you be willing to write a post about what you found upon your return? And, if you're going by ferry, how difficult it is or isn't to get there from Holyhead? Years since I was there; all I can remember is book heaven. Safe journey.

Bottom was cut off from my post.
You can't get to Hay by ferry from any were, believe me i live here. Staying at any B&B or hotel will put you in the center of Hay within a 2 min walk. A few people who drink in a pub i use have stayed at the stables http://www.haystables.co.uk/ which do B&B, you need to scroll down to see it.

Yes i would love to write a post on how i get on. We're flying to Birmingham from Dublin and driving down. About a two hour drive i believe??? Could have gone to Bristol either, not sure which would have been better but we're more familiar with Birmingham airport. G

Gwyneth: It's a fairly straightforward route from Brum Airport to Hay:
A suggestion - M42 SW to M5, S to J8. Onto M50 to J2. take A417 to and bye pass round Ledbury, then A438 to and round Hereford. Continue on A438 across border into Wales, and at Clyro, turn left onto B4351 for short drive over river and back to border with England into Hay. If you want it more scenic and a stop off, leave M5 earlier and go into centre of Worcester, by river and Cathedral. Then take A4103 to Hereford. Enjoy. Look forward to the details of your visit.

The Bear is very central but for my taste rather overdid the tweeness with its profusion of Dolls etc.
Unless there has been a change of ownership since my visit in which case it could be more minimalist.
