Hi, I'm really stuck with what book to read next. The kind of books that I love " Lullabies for Little Criminals " by Heather O'Neill and " The Lovely Bones " by Alice Sebold.

Any good recommendations ?

Thanks

I've read both of the novels you mention. The first I found too dry and the second I found brilliant and quite incomparable. My favorite book right now is Luke Mitchell's Mind Bomb, a darkly humorous coming of age story which bears little in common with either of the two titles you mention but is nonetheless an unforgetable and unique piece of storytelling. You can check the reviews for yourself. I understand your problem. 'The Lovely Bones' left a hole in my life for a couple of days when I finished it and I will read it again someday. Good luck. I hope you find what you are looking for.

You could try 'Splintered' by Andrea Howarth-Salazar. It tells the story of a young doctor's journey to redemption.

Try "The Other Hand" by Christopher Cleave. The back cover does not give you much information, and I don't intend to spoil the plot other than to say, it's about a girl and a woman who meet on a beach in Nigeria, and then meet again about 5 years later in London. I loved it, and have lent it to a friend who also loves it.

I loved "The Lovely Bones, but have not read "Lullabies for Little Criminals"

Try The 19th Wife. Not much like The Lovely Bones but thought-provoking.

Maybe take a further step into the world of well written literary fiction and try Joyce Carol Oates, Siri Hustvedt, Barbara Kingsolver or Linda Grant...

The Other Hand by Chris Cleave was fabulous but don't get me started on the awful 'Lovely Bones'!!!

Try 'The five people you meet in heaven' by Mitch Albom or 'For one more day' by the same author. Both books had me thinking for days. I loved them both and will read them again in a few years.

Try Stones from the river by Ursula hegi. I think of it only because I read it right around the same time I read Lovely Bones and liked it just as much.

'Gone' by Julie Elizabeth Powell. This is a fantasy novel. I'm not usually into fantasy books, but really liked this one. It's based on true events in the author's life and the tragic death of her daughter.
Or try 'House of Sand and Fog' by Andre Dubus III, 'Shadow of the Wind' by Carlos Riuz Zafon
Or you could try my latest 'A Time to Tell', a family saga :)

How about 'Holy The Firm', a short book by Annie Dillard, or 'Pilgrim At Tinker Creek', also by her.

Buy Snow White Turtle Doves by Juliet Bressan. It's a cracking good read, great story, strong characters, great twist. Page turner that'll keep you up all night.

The Lovely Bones was an intriguing book. Cut Short by Leigh Russell if you like crime fiction.

I can definitely second The 19th Wife, and have you tried The Memory Keeper's daughter? For something a bit more classic - try Sophie's Choice.

It will make you cry but " Before I die" is really something special. As is Meg Rosoff "How I live Now". Anything by Jodi Picoult although I enjoyed "The Pact" the most.

Try Tides of Change, by Deborah Brewer. I bought it on the strength of the reviews and it definitely lived up to expectations.
