Can anyone recommend a good fantasy audio book on CD please.

4 of the Dresden files are on audible.co.uk, but the best audiobook to be downloaded is without doubt The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. Each book is about 15 hours long and is brilliantly read. Don't go with cds as they are almost without fail abridged versions and have been decimated.
The Terry Pratchett books are great as well ( when read by Nigel Planar).
Look at audible.co.uk for the a goodish list, it's not got a massive selection but it's the best you will find.

Sorry says:
Hey,

I've been finding it hard to read lately so I've been relying on Audiobooks.

I've mainly been listening to Terry Pratchett as I think his humorous style translates well and as I mainly listen at night his more sinister plots are balanced out by the humour present in all his books.

iTunes have pretty much all of his audiobooks at the moment and the unabridged ones cost 11.95. They are about 10 hours long. I just bought Witches Abroad last night despite having read it twice because I'm liking the narration. I've also recently bought Jingo and Carpe Jugulum both of which where good.

Really the only thing I've listened to outside of TP was Star Trek which was good and a couple of abridged Diana Wynne Jones books which where also enjoyable.

I noticed that The Painted Man was up for about 7.95 and thats a 20 hour audiobook, so that might be worth checking out as well. I think that iTunes do get a lot of their books from Audible so it might be worth checking them against each other price wise.

What kind of fantasy do you prefer?

Meyer's The Twilight Saga is on audio and Charlaine Harris' Sookie Vampire books are.
The Harry Potter series.
Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowel fantasy series for children.
I think you can get Kelley Armstrong's Women of Other World novels on audio too. The first book is called Bitten.

Not at all interested in Harry Potter or the modern romantic vampire novels. I'm more in to adult fantasy i.e. George RR Martin, The First Law trilogy etc. I'm looking for a good story to listen too whilst I'm driving to and from work so CD's are best although I do have a usb port in the car but nothing to plug into it unless you can download books on to the HTC Desire?

Hmm, I'll have a think then. By the way, some of George R R Martin's novels are available on audio from Amazon.

A Shadow on the Glass (View from the Mirror series by Ian Irvine. It is available on audio (might have to get it used from seller marketplace, or from the library though) Really good, adult fantasy, epic type novel - the first in a long series. The later, sequal series is very good too, and might be easier to get hold of on audio. The first book is called Geomancer.

I see that Amazon has the "A Feast for Crows" on audio but not the other books?

All of the George R R Martin Song of Ice and Fire books are available as brilliant and extremely long unabridged audiobooks.

The readers have (I say readers as it sounds like it could be a different person between the books due to the quality of my recordings - all are brilliant though) the best voice of any audiobook reader I have heard aside from Inglis that reads the unabridged LOTR books.

Unfortunately, the earlier audiobooks you can get from audible.com (US version) but audible.co.uk in its wisdom does not have these (or a ton of other good books) available and so you will need to do some searching.

I'd email Amazon about A Dance with Dragons (Song of Ice and Fire) on audio. It is listed as to be released June 2010. Maybe the release date is delayed, or maybe it went out of stock - but it is there.

Without a doubt, the best audio books I have listened to (and I listen all the time in the car) are Philip Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy, narrated by the man himself, not the BBC version.
Jasper Fford's Thursday Next series are also good. And away from fantasy The Book Thief is also amazing on audio.

Audible.com have a much better selection of books by far including Scott Lynch and Patrick Rothfuss amongst many others. However you technically cannot download them from the US due to licensing laws etc, however you can join audible.com and put an american address and zip code in your address lines when entering your credit card details and you're sorted. the address isn't important just find a company and use the zip code. Also available Joe Abercrombie Best Served Cold as well as Guy Gavriel Kay's stuff. It's certainly worth it if you're into audio books.

I didn't realize there was an audio edition read by Pullman! I've listened to the BBC version and I wasn't overly taken with it. When was the version you mentioned released?

In reply to an earlier post on 7 July 2010 11:16 BST
Leigh Booker says:
It's still BBC but unabridged cover to cover version. There is a box set of all three books under His Dark Materials here on Amazon.

This may sound like a silly question but can you down load a audio book from amazon to use it on an apple 5th generation Ipod? Is it possible?

Posted on 12 July 2010 23:10 BST
I'm not sure. Amazon does sell downloads of audiobooks, but I don't know much about Ipod - I have the same great little mp3 player I bought a few yrs back lol. I would email Amazon and ask, though surely, once you download, it's stored to your comp and you can then transfer that file to whatever device you wish?

L. O. Shea says:
There is no problem with downloading to an ipod. You are asked when setting up the account which type of mp3 player you use etc, and it will download automatically to your itunes. Likewise other formats. Amazon uses audible.com for it's audiobooks as it is the same company. Your audible account also sets up a library where you can download the books more than once to different mp3 player types. Although I'm not sure whether purchasing through itunes allows this. I would recommend subscribing to audible.com as you can also get one free book a month under the member terms. I think the monthly fee is £7.49 and as I said you get a free credit, bear in mind that 1 credit can be used to buy a £40 download, I found this out the hard way after I paid for the Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson and found I could have got it for free. aaargh!!.

Posted on 13 July 2010 17:33 BST
Just discovered on audible.com that a the classic Ipod has to be 6th generation or above but sadly mine is only a 5th generation!

Can someone please tell me where I can find all the Song of Ice and Fire audio books?

You can get all GRRMs books on audible.com. There seems to be a licensing issue in europe as I could never find the series on this side of the atlantic. Bear in mind that this is a US site and therefore you need to use a US address on th credit card details, empire state building is a good one. just get the zip code. The UK equivalent is audible.co.uk and this seems to be the default site from where we are, look at the.com version before deciding.
Surprised at the ipod issue as I have a classic ipod and all seems to work fine, wouldn't have thought it an issue as you are downloading onto itunes before saving them to the ipod. I'm no expert though.

Well I've figured it out and set up itunes to use with our old ipod classic 80gb. Where have I been all these years lol. I have now downloaded a few books including The First Law so can't wait to get listening to them.

Hi, I have recently released my own Heroic Fantasy novel, Trance Warriors: The Siege of Scarn on an Audio format. Listen to samples on www.trancewarriors.com and see what you think. Review copies are available in MP3 cd format, to anyone willing to give feedback.
Thank you
