I love fantasy books but lately I seem stuck looking for anything with any substance. I've read the likes of twilight, wuthering heights, night world, house of night, vampire diaries and I've recently purchased the first True Blood Novel. Anything else anybody could recommend for a female teenager. No limitations to the strange-ness, I'm up for any book, maybe a change from vampires but anything will do.

Hi Fiona,
I put together a Listmania, listing the first book of fantasy series that I like for one reason or another. Have a look at it, there maybe something there that might take your fancy... http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/richpub/listma Kelley Armstrong is the obvious recommendation if you like the supernatural stuff, but I think your idea of branching out is a good one, so maybe the Michelle Sagara series. If you like things a bit strange... try the 'Farseer Trilogy' by Robin Hobb. Very quirky story lines and unusual characters.

I'd suggest this selection of very alternate reads, Cormac MaCarthy's - The Road, or Ishiguaro's - Remains of the Day or for fun and frolics then Glovers - The frog and the scorpion

mirror bound by nissa gordon. it's fantasy but set in the future with magic and aliens; there's action, mystery and of course a little romance

Beauty (Fantasy Masterworks) by Sheri S Tepper
A Sudden Wild Magic (Gollancz S.F.) by Diana Wynne Jones Where Late The Sweet Birds Sang (S.F. Masterworks) by Kate Wilhelm These may be borderline Fantasy/SF but at least they are excellent stand alone stories that won't let you go, and you won't be faced with reading by the mile which I did once with Stephen Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant and learned a valuable lesson - how to skim. A more frivolous but great story is My Dirty Little Book of Stolen Time by Liz Jensen. Don't be put off by the title, it is a hilarious story. It is not classed as genre, so look on the a-z shelves, although I think all her books are out of print. Finally Reserved for the Cat (Elemental Masters) by Mercedes Lackey is well worth a holiday read. Good Luck!

I agreee with the suggestion of Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy (the first book in the series of three is "Assassin's Apprentice")
But even better (my opinion only) is "Myrren's Gift" by Fiona McIntosh. It's a wonderful book, 1st in a set of three.

Good teen fantasies - A Posse of Princesses by Sherwood Smith (and pretty much everything else by her though beware first half of CrownDuel which isn't good. For meatier try her Indra series), City of Bones by Cassandra Clare, Missing - When Lightening Strikes (very light) by Meg Cabot, Alanna the First Adventure by Tamora Pierce (and all bar her second series about Daine) and Melissa Marr's series. You might also enjoy Forgotten Truth and Lost Truth by Dawn Cook (first two books pretty boring, I started on book 3 and loved it and didn't find I missed anything by reading the first two later - but I'd probably never had continued if I had started in order!) Mercedes Lacky great for young adults - start with Magic's Pawn.
Adult fantasies you might enjoy: Dragon Prince by Melanie Rawn, Cast in Shadow by Michelle Sagara (AnetteF mentions it above), the Skewered Throne by Joshua Palmatier and Covenants by Lorna Freeman. Great urban fantasy includes Kim Harrison - Dead Witch Walking (female witch as main character leaving 'magic policing' and setting up investigation agency with female vampire and pixie), Patricia Briggs - Moon called (coyote shapeshifter female as main character who interacts with werewolf pack, vamps and fae), Bitten by Kelley Armstrong (as per AnetteF above again, first two books about first female werewolf and other werewoves including 'her' pack) and Illona Andrews - Magic Bites (merc mage who becomes liason for weres, vamps and the guild - human mages).
