Basically I'm a big fan and looking for more fantasy books... the books I like include...
Brisingr (Inheritance Trilogy)
Orcs
Obviously Harry Potter

And lots more which usually include:
Basically anything with dragons fighting magic wizards
I also like fantasy but based in the present time if you know what I mean. But also fantasy in fantasy worlds.

I'm sure you've tried them already - but DragonLance books would seem up your street.

I don't know that many wizard vs dragon books, but you might enjoy David Weber's fantasy series that starts with Oath of Swords (elves, wizards, demons and sterotypical 'races of man' type fantasy - a Hradani is chosen by the 'good' WarGod and isn't too happy about it as his race is generally despised as they were the footsoliders of the evil gods in the last world war. The human races consider Hradani to be similar to Orcs in other fantasies) or Joel Rosenberg's series that starts with The Sleeping Dragon (bunch of gamers end up in a fantasy world with the powers of their 'characters'). Steven Erickson's series that starts with Gardens of the Moon is amazing but very complex - includes powerful dragons, gods, demi-gods, heros with dubious pasts etc. The first book is mostly about a seige where you have all the view points of the various factions including the beseigers who are cynical army veterans with surprising powers.

There are a lot of urban fantasy around but which ones would appeal would depend on your tolerance of romance stories. Some first books of good urban fantasy from male viewpoints (and less of a strong romanatic thread then the good urban fantasy with female viewpoints) are: Storm Front by Jim Butcher (a private eye magician), and Nightlife by Rob Thurman (about two brothers, one of which is half 'demon' and hunted by his demon kin), Dog Days by John Levitt (a musican who was once an enforcer mage yet again caught up in investigation) and Unshapely Days by Mark Del Franco (a mage/investigater gets caught up in a mystery). Basically, most of these series involves magic users getting caught up in investigations and normally with some police cooperation. Nightlife is my fav series out of these and a bit more unusual.

Oh, and just as one possible, Covenants by Loana Freeman is a pure fantasy set in a fantasy world which is very entertaining and you might enjoy that if you aren't looking just for urban or dragons.

Hope this gives you somewhere to start looking! Good luck!

Of course I'll second Kags recommendation of Steven Erikson as he is probably the best fantasy author out there (and my favourite). The Malazan series is definitely not for the faint hearted though. Every time you think you have worked out what's going on, something happens that makes you question the conclusions you have drawn. If you like re-reading books, this series is the one for you as it has more layers than Shrek's onion.

If you have not yet read them, for dragons, you simply can't beat Anne McCaffrey's 'Dragonriders of Pern' series. That is if like me you like them intelligent, noble, bonding with humans and fighting pending disasters. The series is probably best read in the order it was written in, which means start with Dragonflight (Corgi Science-Fiction) Each book in the series is a stand-alone adventure so you can get just the one, see if you like it and take it from there. But if you do... well, there are lots of them so you'll be ok for reading material for a while ;-)

There are dragons in Michelles Sagara's 'Elantra' series the first book of which is Cast in Shadow though they are not the main characters and they are quite different from the Pern dragons as they can and do convert to human shape. The action takes place in an urban environment albeit a fantasy one.

Here is a link to my Listmania contribution which may give you some more reading inspiration...

Good luck - let us know what you end up with!

May I respectfully respect you try my book, The Wishing Book. This is the first novel in a trilogy and is pure fantasy. It features 4 children - 3 boys and a girl who find a book with magical wishing powers. They have quite a few pranks with the book as they try out their new find and these have amusing results. Eventually, they wish to go to Mars and this is where the adventure and thrill really picks up. Once on Mars, they find that the Chief Highness of the Martians, wants the book for himself and will stop at nothing to gain the control of the whole Universe. He throws everything at them - Martian warriors and creatures in his quest to obtain this book.
There are twists and it is difficult for the children to know who they can trust.
Ths is an edge of the seat fantasy adventure with a sequel The Wishing Book 2 - Return to Mars out on 30 November and the third one early next year.
Check it out on Amazon.co.uk or check the author's website www.authorgrahamehoward.co.uk.

Thankyou

Kags and Anette - Steven Erikson's Gardens of the Moon looks really good! Thanks for this recommendations. I think I'll start with that series it will keep me occupied and from what I can see there are 9 books in the series so far.
Also Kags I think I'll look into David Weber's series which looks pretty good as well.
Thanks for the much needed help!

hi, I was just going to suggest that maybe you try the C. L Wilson books...lord of the fading lands. There are four currently with a fifth on the way next year. Its a good mixture of fantasy, magic, romance and action...
Also Karen Chance's 'Midnight's daughter' currently just one book but a second is on the way next January. It focuses on a character called Dorina Basbarb...i don't know if you're familiar with her Cassie palmer series, but I personally thought this one was better. It has a strong female character and strong vampire links.

Happy reading! :-)

Hope you like 'Gardens of the Moon', M. Purewal. I was hooked from page one. The one disadvantage I have found, to reading the 'Malazan' series, is that everything else pales in comparison and I now expect a lot more from other fantasy authors. And re-read - they are books that get even better the second time round.

Keep us posted on how you're getting on!

Try Terry Brooks, Terry Pratchet, Tad Williams and Terry Goodkind. You can't go wrong with any of these fantastic writers.

Robin Hobb! Astounding fantasy author. Once you start with her books, you just can't stop. I've read a lot of fantasy fiction and Robin Hobb remains my favourite author.

Mirror Bound is fantasy, but there aren't any dragons, there are plenty of different worlds.

What about Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series? Also Anne McCaffrey's Dragons of Pern?
