Vampire fiction yay, I love it! Personally I thought Meyer's books were pretty useless, I never read past book three...oh well that's my opinion, but here's some books that focus on vamps that I think are worth looking into... J. R Ward's `Black Dagger Brotherhood' series (dark paranormal romance), Robin McKinley's `Sunshine', Karen Chance's `Cassandra Palmer' (urban fantasy) books and Kathy Love's `Young Brothers trilogy' (paranormal romance), oh and definitely read E. E Knight's `Vampire Earth' (horror) books and Barb and J. C Hendee's `The Nobel Dead' series (horror) and Poppy Z Brite's `Lost Souls' (horror) for something real original.
There are also plenty of other books I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to you that feature vampires in the mythology or are secondary characters or only sometimes take centre stage...Laurell K Hamilton's `Anita Blake' books (ok maybe hesitate a little, I've only read the first and wasn't that bothered but everyone's different), Kresley Cole's `Immortals After Dark' books (dark paranormal romance), Gena Showalter's `Atlantis' books, Nora Roberts `The Circle Trilogy' has a fab vampire villain, there's also a lot of romance and just one more promise : ) Amy Lanes `Little Goddess' books (paranormal romance). I don't know if these will apeal to you as most are pretty dark, with at least small amouts of horror and some are very romantic and erotic but you never know...enjoy!

I haven't read any other series except the Anita Blake books, and I would recommend that noone waste the time and money I did. ( I got almost all of them, had to complete the set-very stupid). It starts off as girl gets bitten by vampire story, and then continues through her series of sexual encounters with practically every other non human character, vampires and werewolves included. In the later books it seems only to deal with her succubus affliction and completely forgets about anything regarding plot and story. Vampirism and sex are inextricably intertwined and we all enjoy a bit of sex but this series has almost become a caricature of itself with completely over the top scenes spread over chapters of the book. Bestiality also features. Yummy....not.

Try the Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris featuring "Sookie Stackhouse" a coctail waitress with a difference. This series has now become a TV show in America "Tru Blood" which will probably wend its way across the water! I also agree Kresley Coles' Immortals after Dark" series are also worth a read.

Vittani says:
The Argeneau series by Lynsay Sands is a true classic. The series begins as pure romance, how each member of a vampire family meets their mates. But as the series goes on, gradually more plot is added, so it becomes as much about the storyline as the romance. Perfect in my opinion. Original scientific take on vampirism. And the males are so easy to fall in love with.
Single White Vampire...Lucern is a vampire. He write biographies about his family that are to his horror being published as paranormal romances. His new editor Kate is determined to get him do some publicity events, which would be a little bit of a problem but not as much as his matchmaking Mother. Love Bites (Book 2 but set before SWV) Lucern's brother Etienne has a problem, someone knows he's a vampire and they keep trying to kill him. Not a problem except people keep taking him to the morgue. Not only that but he can't seem to get the coroner Rachel out of his mind. Tall, Dark and Hungry. (3, set after SWV) This one's Bastien, a workaholic who gradually learns to let his hair down by the unexpected arrival of Terri, who's here for her cousin's wedding. As the wedding catastrophe's mount up, Bastien and Terri's not only have to deal with all that but a bitehappy cousin and a accident prone editor. Ok so those are the first three books, the first two have just been republished as they were from a smaller company. The third is pending but the fourth onwards are all available. In chronological order... (datepublished) 1. A Quick Bite (2005) 2. Love Bites (2004) 3. Single White Vampire (2003) 4. Tall Dark and Hungry (2004) 5. A Bite to Remember (2006) 6. Bite Me If You Can (2007) 7. The Accidental Vampire (2008) 8. Vampires Are Forever (2008) 9. Vampire, Interrupted (2008) 10. The Rogue Hunter (2008) 11. The Immortal Hunter (2009) to be published 12. The Renegade Hunter (2009) to be published. My faves Bite Me if You Can!

Hi,
Do you know the Vampire Diaries series and Night World series by Lisa Jane Smith? First book in the Vampire Diaries series is The Awakening), first book in the Night World series is Secret Vampire. http://www.ljanesmith.net/booklist.php and http://www.nightworld.net/nightworld/ They have many similarities with the Twilight books, but they were written long before Twilight. Ms Smiths other books are very good too: About witches: The Secret Circle trilogy, starting with The Initiation About special powers: Dark Visions, starting with The Strange Power And The Forbidden Game trilogy (starting with The Hunter) Another vampire book you might like is Stone Masters, A Vampire Reckoning by V.M.K. Fewings (ISBN 978-1897370759) You can read an excerpt on Amazon.com and check out the video trailer on: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseact For some very different vampires (and aimed at a slightly younger age group), you could try Demons of the Ocean by Justin Somper, first book in the Vampirates series (http://www.vampirates.co.uk/the-books/) If you want a break from vampires, you could try witches. The Sweep series (Wicca in UK) by Cate Tiernan is my favorite, and I can't help recommending it to whoever seems to like ya books with a bit of romance and supernatural elements. The first book is titled Book of Shadows. You can read an excerpt on Amazon.com, and find more information on http://firefairy.eve7k.com/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cate_Tiernan Finally two (short) vampire series I haven't read yet, but which are on my 'to read' list: Raven Dane: Blood Tears / Blood Lament / Blood Alliance (http://www.bloodtears.co.uk/) Kate Cary: Bloodline / The Reckoning (http://www.katecary.co.uk/bloodline.html Happy reading!

I agree avoid Anita Blake stories, starts off quite well but her writing never improves and it degenerates into nothing but sex. Not that I have anything against sex, even a lot of sex, in a novel but it needs to be good!
I'd recommend the Necroscope series by Brian Lumley but I have a feeling that's not the sort of vampire fic you're after! There's one I remember loving called 'A Taste of Blood Wine' but can't for the life of me remember the author's name, I think it may have been the start of a series too.

Halo572 says:
I couldn't get past the homoerotic/paedophile tones of Interview to move on to any of the others even though I have them. I'm pretty sure they are there as I don't see them in any other books and I am not a Daily Mail reader and it is not often a book makes me feel uncomfortable to read.
I read the first couple of Anita Blake but they are trashy. I didn't expect much else but I still haven't read the others of the boxed set I got because of this. As far as I can tell there is only one vampire book worth reading and that is Dracula. I know it isn't a series but who needs multiples when one is so good? It also doesn't have to descend into cheap erotica of any kind - normal or weird -to keep it going.

Elle L says:
Try the Darkyn series Lynn Viehl, fast action, not too much romance, inredible plot, dark, more suspense, than romance. Also the psy-changeling series is nice (Nalini Singh) but romance is 40% compared to the Darkyn's 20-25% compared to action/suspense/thriller.

jim butcher is fantasy with vampires involved but not the main characters, also the cassie palmer series is quite good as are the books by Kim Harrison. I agree with the reviews of Laurell Hamilton although the latest Skin trade doesnt have quite as much sex.
