I'm looking for a good recording of Prokofiev's music. Maybe a best of, or just a great recording - any suggestions?
Thanks

Micke says:
Symphony-Concerto with Rostropovich (EMI, 1950s)
Anything with Sviatoslav Richter i.e. 8th sonata (DGG) First violin concerto with Oistrakh (EMI). This is definitely my favourite among SP's violin compositions. With the second concerto I still have problems which I'd be more than happy to get over. Lots of people obviously love that piece (Heifetz recorded it but not the first -what a shame I say!) and the two violin & piano sonatas but for me, the first concerto is on a supreme level. Its intensively radiant spring mood just reaches my heart. What an abundant flow of gorgeous, perfect melody, dare I say Mozartian! One of the rare great lyrical-virtuosic concerti I (of limited knowledge indeed) know of. (Did I just invent a category of instrumental concerto? I believe people probably already have used terms at least approximately similar. To that category -any instrument- I would count Mozart, Mendelssohn, maybe Saint-Saëns and then of course J.S. Bach and probably lots of other baroque concertos.)

I really like recordings by the Russian National Orchestra under Michael Pletnev and there are several of music by Prokofiev, although I don't own any works by this composer.

Petrushka has already made suggestions I would have offered and Micke's recommendation of anything of Prokofiev's performed by Sviatoslav Richter is excellent. Before making my own, however, it would be helpful to know what genres of music interest you. It's pointless to recommend choral music, for example, to someone who either has no interest in it or cannot stand it. So help those whom you've asked to help you and we'll do a better job in matching your interests.

S. C. Harrison says:
For a very good disc containing three core works try the following which contains the cantata Aleksandr Nevskii, the symphonic suite Leutnant Kije and the Scythian Suite.
Prokofiev: Alexander Nevsky/Lieutenant Kijé

Pickey, If you are into opera, Gergiev's DVD recording of 'The Fiery Angel' which gives a remarkable insight into Prokofiev's multi-faceted musical personality, as well as providing a visual treat.
