About 40 years ago I read and re-read a story about a some children who learnt about chemistry from a young woman/girl. They had various adventures and the girl taught them chemistry along the way - getting rust out of clothes, finding their way with a carbide lamp, etc. I cannot remember the title or author. Can anyone help me? Thanks.
This sounds so similar to a book that I borrowed and re-borrowed as a child from my local library back in the mid to late 1960s. The scenario painted by Mr Maddock is very familiar, and I loved this book to bits.
I also recall a chapter about spelunking; the first time I had ever heard of such a term. The children used their carbide lamp to good effect here. I think that the older, girl character had a small home chemistry lab as well.
Despite googling and searching, I am no closer to a title or author. I do recall that it was American but I am at a dead end now. Can I please join Mr Maddock in asking for help?
